JOA's name, James Osgood Andrew Brown, is confirmed by JOA's 1907 application for a confederate soldier's pension in Talladega,
Alabama, home of his late sister Elizabeth Helen Brown and her deceased husband, Elbert Green Morris. At his death, Elbert was one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Talladega.
The original James Osgood Andrew Brown, twice widowed, came from the Presbyterian enclave of Liberty Co. Georga to Lincoln Co. Georga in 1790. He was the first native of Georgia to become an ordained Methodist preacher and was instrumental in the church's growth and influence in that part of northeastern Georgia. His son, same name, became a Methodist bishop and decated his life to establishing Methodist churches in the primative areas of western Georgia and in Alabama.

James, named for his father, became a Methodist bishop and decated his life to establishing Methodist churches in the primative areas of western Georgia and in Alabama. In 1851 he presented his Ordination credentials to the authorities in Anniston, Alabama, near where widower, James Brown and his sons J. O. A. , John A. S. , and Willis Mosley were living. Bishop Andrew died in Mobile , Alabama at the onset of the Civil War, and was buried in Lincoln Co. Georgia.
His name was legend in Lincoln and surroundinf counties of Georgia, and at least one other family there--Clark--named a son after him.
