living in Williamson County at that enumeration, I have not seen this
information yet.I think your Henry is the son of Eli which Sharon Doliante mentions in her
work. In her letter written to Barbara Norman Peacock in 1965, she states:"Eli Norman, (my known ancestor) believed son of the above Thomas Norman,
was born about 1740, place unknown, and first appeared in Surry County, NC,
in 1771 (the year it was formed from Rowan). His wife was Sarah Ann

Paul Abney; Isaac, (my ancestor), who married Nancy ( ); Henry, who
settled in Illinois, as did his sister, Rhoda (Norman) Abney; and
undoubtedly several others, whose names are not known to me. Another was
probably Aaron.I found this info in a book for Wmson Co;s 150the birthday. (Jeana

BRUSHY FORK where Rhoda was a memberBrushy Fork Church, near Harco, was organized by members who were dismissed for that purpose from Bethel's Creek Church in March 1843, viz., Richard Isham, Piety Isham, William Abney, Rhoda Abney, Nancy Grissom, Winna Carney, Malinda Bond, and Polly Murphy, and possibly a few others.
Brushy Fork Church joined the Muddy River Association in 1843, at which time Richard Isom and William Abney were the messengers, who reported 12 members. Elders Chester Carpenter and Milton Carpenter both joined this church. Other ministers who were members here included Elders B. G. Murphy, W. M. Morgan, and T. J. Johnson.
Pastors of Brushy Fork Church have included the following: Elders J. T. F. Lewis (1849), Achilles Coffey (1853), Isaac Walker (1853), Thomas Spain (1855), B. G. Murphy (1881), Wilford Morgan (1882), S. R. Foster (1883), Josiah Harris (1888), John Reeder (1894), W. E. Weaver (1897), C. F. Stuckey (1900), H. A. Todd and W. C. Arnold (jointly, 1901), B. F. Querry (1902), W. A. Fish (1903), T. Leo Dodd (1922 as assistant and 1928 as pastor), Mervin Drake, and John Odell.
The first church building was probably a log structure. A second building evidently was constructed in about 1868. A third building was erected in 1884, and a fourth one in 1912, but it was too small, so it was sold. The present meeting house was built in 1922. The "Old Brushy Cemetery" is adjacent to the church grounds on the north and west.

Jan,I have found a number of references to John R. Norman in the RootsWeb World
Connect Project. You do have to be careful about this information as much on
the site is incorrect and unproven. Be sure to verify it for yourself. Go to
Rootsweb.com and search the World Connect Project. It is so difficult to
determine the relationships because the same names were used in many
families. Here is a little of what I found:
John R. Norman b. 23 Dec 1800, Duplin, NC, son of Isaac Norman and Nancy
Bennett of Greenville County, NC, grandson of Eli Norman and Saran Ann Green
of Virginia.From jmullins@leo.net;
John R. Norman was born 1800 in North Carolina and his wife, Nancy Weaver

Counties. He also served as County Commissioner in Saline County. When John
R. Norman wrote his will in 1874, he willed his 120 acre farm to his sons,
daughters, and the children of his diseased son, Charles Henry Norman. At
the time of writing his will the land he willed was mostly coal land and had
an opened coal mine. John R. Norman died in 1884 and was buried beside his

Notes for *PAUL ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Paul went to S. C. with his parents about 1769 and lived in Greenville S. C. ; Went to Tenn. about 1795, married Rhoda Norman in March 1785 and had children. While a resident of Albermarle Co., Va., he enlisted not far from Charlottsville, Va., and served as a Private in the 14th. Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the brest bone at the lower edge. He was wounded several other times. He fought in battles at Brandywyne, Guilford Court House, Sand Hills, and Eutaw Springs. three years service. At the time of his marriage to Rhoda, Paul was 6 ft. tall and had a blacksmith shop in Greenville Co., S. C. .
Paul reared the infant son of his brother, Nathaniel Abney, who was also named Nathaniel, after the death of his Mother, Lucy Norell Abney, in 1792. It was through this close relationship that this National Abney, Jr., joined them in Ill. about 1858, after the death of his wife which occurred in 1855.Following is a document drawn up when Rhoda applied for Paul's pension:
STATE OF ILL. WILLIAMSON CO. : These personally appeared before me subscriber Sterling Hill, one of the Justices of the Peace, in and for said Co. . Henry Norman, and after ---------------was deuly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath despose and say that Rhody Abney, who made a declaration before David Upchurch, one of the Judges of the Co. Court in and for Gallatin Co. on the -----------day of April last in order to obtain the benefits of the laws governing pensions. To certain said laws is the widow of the identical man commonly called PAUL ABNEY. I was well acquainted with him for many years of his life. Immediately after he left the army of the Revolution. He is the said Paul Abner, or Paul Abney--Put up a blacksmith shop near my father's store and not being able to write, he employed my father for his clerk who kept his books for several years during which time he married the fore said Rhoda Abney - Her maid name was Rody Norman, the daughter of Eli and Sary Ann Norman.
The said Paul Abney was most generally known as Paul Abner. It was the way that he spoke said name and consequently others generally called him Abner. I for years use to frequent his shop, have frequently put my finger on the hole where he was wonded in the brest bone at the lower edge.
I was present when he and the said Rhody was married. Am still aquainted with his widow and these children. They still pass most generally by the name of Abner, though at this time the name Abney.
Sworn to & subscribed before me this-------day of June, one thousand eight hundred and forty seven.
------------------------Hill, J. P. signed: HENRY NORMANShe further declairs that she was married to the said Paul Abney some time in March in the year seventeen hundred and eighty five in the Co. of Greenville, South Carolina, but can't remember the Esquires name, said that her husband had foresaid died on the 15th of June, one thousand eight hundred and fifteen, and that she still remains his widow. She further declairs that she was not married to the said prior to his leaving the services, but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January, seventeen hundred and ninety four at the time afore said. Subscribed, and sworn to before me on the day and year of our Lord first above written.
DAVID UPCHURCH, Conn. for G. C. RHODY X ABNEY
her markPaul Abney took his brother, Dr. Nathaniel Abney's, youngest son to Tenn. with him to raise after his father was killed in a duel in 1788, and Dr. Nathaniel's wife Lucy died in 1792. The child was also named Nathaniel.
The following was sent in the Abney newsletter:
Pvt. Paul ABNER is a larger problem. He enlisted in the Continental Line from Albemarle County, Virginia. Amherst County was created in 1761, therefore he did not enlist in that part of Albemarle County which had become Amherst County. Which ABNEY family was in that part of Albemarle County which remained Albemarle County? Which other family began using the surname ABNER? Abner ABNEY's family, of course.
Also interesting to note is that Pvt. Paul ABNER named a son Abner. So, on the face, it would seem that Pvt. Paul ABNER was a son of Abner ABNEY, and brother of Elisha ABNER, who also migrated to Tennessee before moving on to Kentucky. Pvt. Paul also named a son John (Abner had a son, John), and a son Elias. Abner used the Biblical name Elisha for a son. Elias was used only in the New Testament and was the same as
the Old Testament Elijah. Elisha in the O.T. was attendant, disciple and successor of that same Elijah. So what is the problem with the theory that Pvt. Paul ABNER was Abner ABNEY's son? Abner ABNEY left a will in Albemarle County and mentioned only 3 children, John, Milley , & Elish.
A reading of the will leads me to believe that Abner had no children, save those mentioned in the will. Since Abner & his brother, Paul (bapt. 1699) were so close, it is reasonable to believe that Pvt. Paul ABNER, as a son of Paul (bapt. 1699) were close as well. Therefore, pending further investigat-ion, I believe that Pvt. Paul ABNER was a son of Paul ABNEY (bapt. 1699).

From the "HISTORY OF GALLATIN, SALINE, HAMILTON, FRANKLIN AND WILLIAMSON
COUNTIES, ILLINOIS" By Goodspeed, 1887"JESSE ABNEY, farmer, was born in Bushy Precinct in 1832, the son of Joshua
and Sarah (Stone) Abney. The father born in Tenn. in 1807, was the son of
William Abney, native of Tenn. and who removed to Saline Co. about 1825,
where he remained until his death. Joshua came at that time also and in 1831
married and spent the remainder of his life in Bushy Precinct. He was a
farmer and a member of the Regular Baptist Church. The mother born in
Virginia in 1812, is still living in Saline Co. Our subject was educated in
the common schools, and tells how he saw the country, now nicely timbers,
then covered with grass. In Nov., 1855 he married Mary, Dau. of John and
Mary Murphy, of Williamson Co., and born in Saline Co.. Seven of their 9
children are living; Nancy A., Patsey, wife of George Bond; Eliza, Sallie,
Lewis, Douglas and Joshua. His present farm is the old homestead he entered
from the Government after his marriage. He is the owner of 420 acres; and
besides owning a half interest in the drug store of Abney-Carr & Co. at
Galatia, he is running a general store on his farm. His realestate in
Galatia is also considerable. He is a Mason, and has been a life-long
democrat, first voting for Buchanan. He is an earnest advocate of general
education, and long been one of the leading citizens and business men."

BRUSHY FORK where William was a memberBrushy Fork Church, near Harco, was organized by members who were dismissed for that purpose from Bethel's Creek Church in March 1843, viz., Richard Isham, Piety Isham, William Abney, Rhoda Abney, Nancy Grissom, Winna Carney, Malinda Bond, and Polly Murphy, and possibly a few others.

Some confusion is associated with Cordelia -- If this is the same Cordelia Gasaway that married James Alexander Reed then it would appear that she was not the child of Lewis & Rhoda Gasaway but they may have taken her into their household. Her mother is noted as being Mollie Gasaway (single) and her father as Lewis Whitesides. Mollie Gasaway is mentioned on the 1860 census as being the mother but as also as being single and she did not mention having any other children.

Notes for PETER G. GASAWAY:
"PETER G. GASAWAY---MARION DAILY REPUBLICAN--SEPTEMBER 1933"
Peter Gasaway Dictated Story of His Life.Three months before his death, P. G. Gasaway, pioneer resident of Saline Co., and father of coroner Lon Gasaway of Williamson Co., called his son to his bedside and asked him to write a letter regarding his life which could be printed after his death. Mr. Gasaway died at the home of his Dau., Mrs. George Swafford, 105 S. Gray St., Marion on Monday morning Sept. 5, and on Sept. 7, interment was made at Old Bushy Cem. in Saline Co.. His letter follows:
"Galatia, Ill. R. F. D. 2, June 3, 1933"
"I can't write and I am calling on my son, Lon Gasaway to write for me. I want to say a few words about my parents, Lewis and Rhoda (Abney) Gasaway. They were married Dec. 20, 1832. To this union ten children were born, Milly, Jane, John, Christine, William, Eliza, Elizabeth, Bob, Peter, and Pauline. Time back then was different from now. They had to make all the clothes they wore, and my father made all the shoes for his family and had to go to Carbondale or Shawneetown to get the leather. One pair of shoes was all we children got a year.
I stayed at home with my parents until I was married, that was June 16, 1869, to Evelyn Morris. Squire Hyram Boatright married us. We then moved to ourselves in Bushy township, and rented a little place the first year. We went to work, both of us, and enjoyed life and saw many happy days as we lived together. Nine children were born to this union. Two, Harvy and Milo, died at a young age. Tommy lived for 26 years. The other children still live at the present time. They are Mrs. Hardennia Swafford, living at Marion, Leonard Gasaway, Carterville, Kirt Gasaway in the old home settlement in Saline Co. and Charley Gasaway of Bushy township, in the old home settlement. My wife and I lived together about 54yrs., 5mo., and 25days.
I will now change to another subject. There came a time in my life, back in 1884 when I was troubled and under a heavy burden, and I could not get rid of it, only at times. The Good Lord gave me relief and caused me to praise him at that time, and made me so happy for he had saved a poor sinner like me and began leading me in a new life in Jesus Christ. I have tried to live that way ever since. My wife was a member of Bushy Fork Baptist Church and was baptized in July 1876, by old brother Thomas Spain. Later, I joined the Old Bushy church at Bushy Fork, that was 1889. We made a big church, all in peace and fellowship. My wife and I always enjoyed the christian life and we went to the sister churches. We would visit Old Ruff church in Saline Co. and Little Spring church, East Raleigh, Wolf Creek, west of Eldorado, Cottage Grove, east of Harrisburg, and we attended all associations. We also attended the Old Bethelehem church in Williamson Co., back in 1889.
I have never forgotten my good old kind mother. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. At this time I want to call in my nephews and neices, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and I want to tell them all goodbye. Futhermore, I want to tell all my friends goodbye, for we will all be together again, some sweet day in that house, not made with hands, eternal in heaven.
I still own my little home down in Saline Co., Bushy township. I am taking my wife's picture with me to the grave. I have had this picture ever since before we were married, and I want it pinned on my brest, for I am going where she is.
P. G. Gasaway

Annie Glenn came with her parents by wagon train in 1873 to Texas where they setteled on a farm in Kaufman Co., Tx. . Her Mother died soon after and Annie helped to care for her sisters. Annie met the son of their family Dr., John Robert Long and later they married. They moved west, stopping in Glasscock Co., where John Long hearded sheep awhile. Later they moved to Big Spring, Howard Co., Tx., in 1886. John drove a drey wagon (freight wagon) pulled by a large team of mules, hauling lumber from Lamesa and Colorado City into Big Spring as there was a great demand for lumber for houses. They lived on west First St. where Jesse was born. Annie took sick with the "Bloddy flux" and died. Aquilla remembers his mother sang just before she died, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Three weeks later Jesse died. John put his children in foster homes. After Aquilla married, John Long lived with him and his family until Aquilla's death 4 March 1918. Notes for *FRANCIS MARION ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
In the fall of 1873, a wagon train arrived in Kaufman Co., Tx., from Saline Co., Ill..This train consisted of 13 wagons and was made up of Francis Marion Abney and Sarah Ann "Sally" (Summers) Abney family, Melinda Jane Abney Gordon family (She is a first cousin to Francis. Their mothers were sisters.), Frank Summers(a brother of Sarah Ann Summers) family, and William M. and Elizabeth Jane (sister to Francis M. Abney) Glenn families. These families were all related by blood or marriage. The Glenn family wanted to move to Texas and their loved ones decided to move with them. My grandmother, Sarah Isabell Abney, was 3 years old when she traveled on this wagon to Texas.
The children were taught during the long trip. One of the children learned to count on the trip, as her mother had her count the wagons every day as they were circled at camp time. The wagons were put into a circle every night with the livestock inside an inner circle so the Indians couldn't take them. Although there was a constant watch for Indians, there was no trouble.Francis Marion Abney and his sister, Elizabeth Jane , were descendants of the Abney's that came to the new world, America, in the early 1600's.
Francis is buried in College Mound Cem. in Kaufman Co., Texas. Notes for *SARAH ISABELL ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Sarah came to Texas at the age of one year in a covered wagon. The family settled in Kaufman Co., Tx. . They came to Texas with other families....all related by blood or marriage. They were the Summers (Sarah's grandparents), Abney's (her parents and siblings), and the Glens (her uncles, aunts, and cousins). A total of 10 wagons made the trip together. See more info. on Francis Marion Abney notes.
Mother Pickens was sweet to me. I stayed at her house for quite a while when I was 3 years old and my dad was in the hospital. I was very young, but I remember her showing me her pretty quilts in her quilt box, calling me in from play to eat the good meals & homemade cookies in her kitchen. She showed me the rose garden and let me pick a rose (but told me not to get any more). I spent the night with her years later when I was 16. We had a good visit and then she went to bed early. She closed the door between our rooms and told me to stay up as late as I wanted to. That was thoughtful because I have always liked to stay up late. After she was unable to care for herself, my Mom and Dad fixed a room for her at their house with things from her house that she liked. She just refused to stay...wanted to go home. She was unable to care for herself, so she had to go to the nursing home. I sat with her for a day twice when she was in the hospital for her last illness. She passed away in a Terrel Tx. hosp. March 2, 1959....notes by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for *ROBERT WILLIAM PICKENS:
In the 1890 tax record R. W. Pickens is listed as owning 50 acres valued at $200. It was the old original grant of J. Salinguah. Robert was a farmer-carpenter and during World War 1, he and his son Lindsey carried the mail on the Star route from Edgewood Tx. to Canton Tx. . In later years he had a peanut machine on the streets of Edgewood and sold hot roasted peanuts. When he retired he was carrying the mail from the post office to the depot.
Robert was my grandfather. He died when I was 4 years old but I can remember sitting in the porch swing at his home talking to him. I stayed with them for a while when my daddy was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. He used to make walking canes in his shop behind the house (they were always painted black, or at least the ones I ever saw were). He let me use one of them to push on the porch floor to make the swing go (my feet didn't reach the floor). He made a special child size cane just for me and painted it black like the adult canes. I was so proud of it, but it wouldn't reach the floor to make the swing go. I remember wishing that I had the big cane back. The little cane is only a memory now, long gone and no one knows whatever happened to it....notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

The * was added as a note to find our line easier
My daddy was Ocie Talmadge "Pas" Pickens. Even though my 3 brothers and my sister called him Daddy, I called him Papa. His grandchildren called him Pappy. Mother called him Pas. Papa was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ and attended faithfully after he was baptized at age 63. I remember telling my Aunt Mearl that Papa had been baptized. Her comment was "Thank goodness. He is such a good man. Now he will get credit from God for it." He was a good man, good Christian, and had a knack of making all his family feel that they were his favorite. He was a farmer, feed store owner, and loved to fish and was very good at it. Papa always seemed happy and was always whistling a happy tune. He was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. He died in 1975 of cancer...note by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for *LYDIA CAROLINE WADE:
Lydia was the baby of 15 children. She is a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where she still attended faithfully at 96 years of age. When Lydia was a teenager she legally changed her name from Caroline to Bill. When asked (at age 94) why she did this, she said "because it was cute, smart and foxy". She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many of the ladies of Edgewood. She has been a lifelong Edgewood area resident. Lydia is 98 years old, as of the 13th day of April, 2003. Much can be said for those 98 years, but most important is that she was, and is, a Christian. She has lived that life. It has been said that how you live your "dash" (the dash between date of birth and date of death) is what is important. Her "dash" has been lived well......memories by Betty Pickens Phillipsvi. Notes for EUNICE S. ABNEY:
Eunice married Arthur Hurst in 1901 and was a young widow with three small children by 1914. They had had two children earlier who had died young. Eunice worked very hard trying to provide for herself and her three children, Arthur Lee, Farris, and Elzonia. She took in washing to earn a meager living. In that day and time the laundering was done outside in a large black wash pot. The water was heated by building a fire under the wash pot and usually had a "bar" of homemade lye soap in it to clean the clothes. The water had to be brought from the cistern or well of water or from a stock tank. It was carried one bucket at a time from the source and poured into the pot. A rub board was inserted into the pot with the clothes and the soap was rubbed on the ridges of the rub board and then the clothes were rubbed over the soapy ridges to clean them. Such was the work of this little widow trying to provide for her three children. Eunice was a Baptist.Eunice only lived a year and a half after the death of Arthur. She died of Pneumonia and jaundice. The children of Eunice and Arthur were taken by a sister of Eunice, Jane Abney Pickens. Jane had a house full of children of her own, as well as two of her grandchildren whose mother had died in childbirth, to care for, but looked after the Hurst children as long as she could. She made them each some new clothes and then had to place them in the Buckner Orphans Home just East of Dallas, Texas. The children grew up there.
In the year 2001, one of the grand-daughters of Jane lives next door to one of the grand-daughters of Eunice.---notes by Betty Pickens Phillips, grand Neice of Eunice.

Notes for FARRIS ELMER HURST:
Farris Was put in the Buckner orphans home May 5, 1917 by his Aunt Jane Abney Pickens. He left the home July 1928.Farris may have been named for Phary Summers (he was called by some as Farris, see notes), the son of Pharoah Sommers, who I think was a son of James. This would make the older Ferris the great uncle of Eunice S. Abney, young Ferris' mother. I know of no other name of Ferris in the family...Note by Betty Phillips
