Possiable migration dates: to Ireland 1685; to pa. 1719; to Paxton Pa. before 1735; to Va. 1740.
1719- on records Dutch Reformed Church, Bensalem, Bucks Pa., 1719. 1719--1722-William Pickens and wife on records of Dutch Reformed Church, Bensalem, Bucks Co., Pa. (Sharp, PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, p. 2)"In the records of the Dutch Reformed Church, Bensalem, Bucks Co., Pa., under the heading "Entries made by Elder Christophel Van Zandt, during the ministry of Rev. Malachi Jones, 1719-1722" there is a list of 'Newcomers from Erlandt' who joined the church in which we find, '1719 William Peckins and his wife by certificate' and further down in the list is: '1720 Isrell Peckins by profession' '1722 Margaret Picken by profession'
From the fact that William Peckins (Pickens) and his wife joined the church by certificate we believe that he was the head of the family and the father of about 6 teenage children, the oldest of whom, Israel Pickens joined the church by profession when he became of age.
The records of Bucks Co., Penn. , show the death of a William Pickens in 1735.
Lancaster Co., Penn., was formed from Chester Co., in 1729. Just before or shortly after 1729 several Pickens young men moved to Paxtang Parish, or Township in Lancaster Co., which is in that part of the country which in 1875 was cut off to form Dauphin Co., Penn. .
Between 1729 and 1739 there are many records of Israel Pickens, Andrew Pickens, John Pickens, William Pickens, and Gabriel Pickens. All of these were brothers, we beleive, and sons of William Pickens who joined Bensalem Church in Bucks Co., in 1719.

"To the Worshipful Court of Augusta Co. The petition of sundry inhabitants of this Co. by this North Mountain, in Captain Harrison's and Captain Love's Companies, humbly sheweth: That your petitions are daily troubled by John O'Neal, a person of evil fame, who, being ill natured, evil, designing, citigious, wicked man, he often takes occasion to come to the houses of some of your petitioners and then designedly raises and foments disputes with them in which he makes use of the most opprobrious and abuseful words he can invent, and as he is bound to the pease, dares anyone to strike him, therefore, should any of us strike or beat him we know not what might be the consequences as we are unacquainted with the law and his usual manner threatens to shoot us if he sees any of us out of our own plantations, that he will do us all the damage he can by killing our horses, cattle etc., and when reproved of his misbehavior he tells us that if he does any action, be it ever so bad, that he will be cleared by this Court for two pieces of eight. His behavior is such that your petitioners are afraid to leave their families to go about their lawful affairs, not knowing that he may fulfil his threats before our return by killing our wives or children, burning our houses, or doing some other irreparable damage, and, as doubtless your Worships is well acquainted with the behavior of this malicious man, we hope you will take our case into consideration and fall upon some method to hinder him from being guilty of such outrages and irregularities for the future. That we, being subject to his Majesty and the laws of the Dominion, may be no longer abused by such a person in the above manner, and your petitioners, as in duty bound, shall ever pray.----

Notes for GENERALANDREW PICKENS:
Andrew Pickens
A Brief BiographyAndrew Pickens was a man of contradictions. Born in Pennsylvania, he became one of the most influential men of South Carolina. Almost unschooled, he had a remarkable ability to direct his thoughts straight past diversions to the main point of an issue. Serious by nature (some say he never once laughed), he married Rebecca Calhoun, a charming, outgoing woman who filled the house with guests and happy activity. Andrew Pickens learned his guerrilla warfare battle techniques from fighting and subduing the Indians, yet, at the end of his life he was so revered by the local Cherokee Indians that they honored him with a special name of respect. And finally, this quiet, private, unassuming man has entered history as one of the great patriots of the Revolutionary War and the early years of our nation.
Andrew Pickens was born in Paxton, Pennsylvania on September 19, 1739. His family soon moved to Staunton, Virginia, and in 1752 or 1753 moved to the Waxhaws in South Carolina (near present-day Lancaster). This farmhouse later would be the birthplace of President Andrew Jackson. In 1755, there were some Indian uprisings in the area and Andrew's father, the elder Andrew Pickens, organized a militia company. Andrew, then sixteen years old, volunteered. This was the first of many skirmishes against the Cherokee. He fought alongside Colonel Archibald Montgomery after the Long Canes massacre of February 1, 1760. Later, he joined Lieutenant Colonel James Grant in another campaign to subdue the Cherokee. This last experience marked a turning point for Andrew Pickens. The brutality of the whites toward the Indians, including vicious mass killings of women and children, directly influenced Pickens' later decent and humane treatment of the Cherokee.
These battles taught Andrew Pickens how to fight and win a war. The Cherokee instructed him well in the techniques of guerrilla warfare. When the British came, Pickens and his men could materialize, do their damage, and vanish into the woods. They were the upcountry version of Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) and his men in the lower part of the state. Andrew Pickens was such a successful military leader that he rose in rank from captain of militia to brigadier general through the course of the Revolutionary War. His greatest victories were at Kettle Creek (1779), Cowpens (1781) (where he joined General Daniel Morgan to defeat the British Colonel Tarleton), and the recapture of Augusta, Georgia (1781). The movie, "The Patriot," generally describes the actions of Pickens' militia at the Battle of Cowpens.
After the war, Andrew Pickens became active in local South Carolina politics. He helped negotiate boundary disputes with other states. He served in the state legislature. He helped establish the state judicial system. He helped draft most of the legislation regarding Indian affairs. Finally, he was U. S. Congressman (1793-1795).
In his last years, Andrew Pickens retired to Tamassee, where he truly became beloved by the local Cherokee Indians. Tamassee, meaning Sunlight of God, was honored ground to the Cherokee. They welcomed Andrew Pickens and gave him an Indian name, Skyagunsta, meaning Great Wizard Owl, in recognition of him as a good, wise leader.
Andrew Pickens died in 1817 and is buried next to his wife at Old Stone Church cemetery in Clemson, South Carolina. His tombstone says, "A Christian, Patriot and Soldier." found: http://www.andrewpickens.com/pickensbio.html

A land grant in South Carolina dated Sept. 3, 1765 for a tract of 100 acres of land in Granville Co. on Savannah River, bounded on the SW side of Kelly and on the south by the river. The location of this land is near the mouth of Rosses creek. The tract was surveyed by John Pickens, district surveyor. He received another grant for 50 acres on Sept. 23, 1784; surveyed by Patrick Calhoun, D. S. and described as bounded by the river on the SW, and Wm. Mcgowen on the east, and on the NW by his own land. If he was a soldier during the revolution we have no record of it. There is record that he received an indent in 1785 for some beeves furnished the militia. The census of 1790 shows him in Abbeville Dist. with 3 males above 16 and 3 females, including himself and his wife. He was not in Abbeville Co. in 1800 and later census records show some grandchildren born in Georgia around 1800 to 1805. Tradition states they were early pioneers to Tenn., and lived in Lincoln Co., Tenn., but by 1819 most of them moved to the new Co. of Hardin in Tenn.. Jonathan Pickens, Sr. is shown in the census of 1830, living in Hardin Co. with his wife. He was between ages 80-90, born between 1740-1750. His wife was born between 1760-1770. Two sons of Jonathan Pickens,Sr. also moved to Hardin Co. as will be shown.from PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH--E. M. Sharp

Notes for GABRIEL PICKENS:
Gabriel Pickens was in Hardin Co.,Tenn. in 1820 when the census was made. He had lived at one time in Georgia, as several of his children are known to have been born in Georgia in 1804 and 1805, Izariah was born in 1815 in Georgia, and Lydia was born in Tenn. in 1816, according to the 1850 census. Gabriel probably moved to Lincoln Co., Tenn. about 1818.He is shown in old court minutes in 1819 as being in the county. He received land which was surveyed for him on Rogers Creek which remained in the family, and probably still belongs to descendants. The outline of this family has been reconstructed almost wholly from census records, deeds, court minutes, and marriage records in the court house.Notes for MARY (POLLY) UNKNOWN:
In 1850 Census she was 73 and was dead before 1860. The census of 1820,1830, and 1840 of Hardin Co., Tenn. shows that she and Gabriel Pickens had at least 11 children. The names of 8 of them are known. The 2 oldest daughters are not known and no doubt had married soon after coming to Hardin Co., Tenn.In the 1850 Hardin Co., Tenn. census, Mary was living in the home with two of her daughters, Hannah and Patsey. Both daughters still had their maiden names, Pickens. Hannah was 28, Mary 73, and Patsey 46. ..notes by Betty Pickens Phillips.

52. i. ZACHARIAH8 PICKENS, b. 1791, South Carolina.
ii. MARGARET PICKENS, b. Bet. 1800 - 1810; m. JONES.Notes for MARGARET PICKENS:
The only reason we can identify her is that her sister Patsey Pickens named her as "my beloved sister Margaret Jones." A search of the census of Hardin Co., Tenn. and of Tishomingo Co., Miss. has failed to locate her. It will be noted later that a son of her brother William Pickens married a Miss Jones in Tishomingo Co., Miss.. She could have been a daughter of Margaret Pickens Jones.iii. PATSEY PICKENS, b. 1804, Va.; d. 1870.
Notes for PATSEY PICKENS:
There are no records to show Patsey ever married.
Her will is recorded in will book "B", pg. 52 Signed by her, April 30, 1870. She named her "Beloved Sisters, Hannah S. Pickens, Margaret Jones, Elizabeth Phillips, Izzy Bivens, and Lydia Welsh, and her Beloved brother William Pickens. She named: Jacob Vanhouse as executor, and witnesses were: Wilson Pickens and W. Covey.
Deed Book L, P. 377- a deed was executed, on Sept. 30, 1857 whereas Gabriel Pickens of Hardin Co., conveyed to Patsey Pickens, Hannah Pickens, and Lydia Pickens, (who has since intermarried with one John C. Welch) a certain tract of land containing 163 1/2 acres, and whereas Patsey, Hannah and Lydia all of mature mind have divided the said tract amongst themselves, we John C.Welch and wife Lydia Welch make quit claim to two thirds of this tract, etc."
In book H. Page 423, June 1, 1847, Mary Pickens of the state of Tenn. and Hardin Co. makes deed to Patsey and Hannah Pickens to tract of land on Rogers Creek, Range 121, Section 2 . Mary is Polly, widow of Gabriel.
Book H., page 480. May 15, 1847; Mary Pickens made deed for one dollar-$1.00 to 16 acres in Range 13, Sec. 100, ti Anderson Cole, on Rogers Creek. Witnessed Mathew Cole and Masten Moore. Anderson Cole may have married a daughter.
Book W. Page 477; Jan. 1, 1889. Hannah Pickens deeded the land left her by her sister Patsey to William Welch, nephew, part of Range 12, Section 2, deeded to Polly Pickens earlier.

Notes for FRANCIS WILKERSON PICKENS:
A letter to me from Ted Hinson, E-mail Address: ninety62000@yahoo.com1. Lucy Pettway Holcome Pickens / wife of Gov. Francis Wilkinson Pickens who was the son of your Andrew Pickens. She is the only Lady to ever be featured on any American Currency. She is also on others, but this is a clear shot. She was a very well loved first lady that exemplified the title Southern First Lady. Francis and Lucy was so loved by the Rushian Zsar and his wife that instead of staying in the embassy, they were asked to stay in the castle. Their only child was born in Rushia. Francis was called back from that post to be Governor of SC. Lincoln picked the wrong man to try to run over. Francis Pickens stood his ground against the agression of Lincoln and his invasion of his State and Country. SC was another Country at the time. Good reading if you ever get a chance. Not like it is in the history books at all. Did you know that 300,000 Union soldiers owned slaves while fighting the South. Is that Hypocracy or what. Oops. sorry, I'm getting into history.
2. Francis Wilkinson Pickens stone. Neatly kept in a ramshack cemetary in Edgefield, SC
3. Lucy Pettway Holcombe Pickens / Gov. Picken's wife.
Hope this adds to your family files. Thanks again for the soap trick. That's really neat and I'll surely use it. Oh, the other attachment is a new Gospel song I'm working on. The record label I write for is in San Antonio, TX This is just a home recording, but I wanted to let you hear it. I tried to finish it before Easter to sing at Church, but I got too many projects going. have a great week! Ted
Notes for LUCY PETWAY HOLCOMBE:
PICKENS, LUCY PETWAY HOLCOMBE (1832-1899). Lucy Pickens, renowned Southern beauty, second of five children of Beverly LaFayette and Eugenia Dorothea (Hunt) Holcombe, was born on June 11, 1832, near La Grange, Fayette County, Tennessee, on the Holcombe plantation, named Westover or Woodstock. She attended La Grange Female Academy and in 1846, with her older sister, Anna Eliza, began study in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at another girls' school, which she attended for two years. Between 1848 and 1850 the Holcombes moved to Marshall, Texas. While awaiting completion of the mansion on their nearby plantation, Wyalucing,qv the family resided in a Marshall hotel. The Presbyterian church of Marshall was organized in the Holcombes' rented quarters. Beverly Holcombe became its first elder.Lucy became highly acclaimed throughout the South for her "classic features, titian hair, pansy eyes, and graceful figure." In 1850, after a visit with the family of Mississippi governor John Quitman, Lucy looked in on the legislature, which then adjourned in her honor. Like Quitman, she espoused the liberation of Cuba. Her first affianced, identified as a Lieutenant Crittenden by one writer, died in a filibustering expedition of Gen. Narciso López. Subsequently Lucy, using the pseudonym H. M. Hardeman, wrote The Free Flag of Cuba, or the Martyrdom of Lopez: A Tale of the Liberating Expedition of 1851, a novelette published in 1855 by the New York publishers DeWitt and Davenport.
At White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, in the summer of 1856, Lucy met Francis Wilkinson Pickens, twice a widower and twenty-seven years her senior. Her acceptance of his marriage proposal, it is said, hinged on his acceptance of a diplomatic post abroad. President James Buchanan appointed him ambassador to Russia, and on April 26, 1858, at Wyalucing, Pickens and Lucy were wed. Lucy was a favorite at the Russian court. She gave birth to her only child at the imperial palace on March 14, 1859, and named her Eugenia Frances Dorothea Olga Neva (the last two names being added by the czarina); the daughter came to be known as Douschka (Russian for "little darling"), a nickname that she kept all her life. Though raised a Presbyterian, Lucy was converted to her husband's Episcopalianism while in Russia.
Foreseeing troubled times for the South, Pickens resigned his diplomatic post in the fall of 1860 to return home. He was elected governor by the South Carolina legislature and was inaugurated on December 17, 1860. By selling the jewels that had been given her in Russia, Lucy helped outfit the Confederate Army unit that bore her name, the Lucy Holcombe Legion. Two portraits of her were used on Confederate money-one on the one-dollar notes of June 2, 1862, and another on the $100 notes of December 2, 1862, April 6, 1863, and February 17, 1864. Mrs. Pickens was vice regent for South Carolina in the Mount Vernon Ladies Association and was also the originator and president of an association that sought to erect a monument to the Confederate dead of Edgefield County, South Carolina. She died at her home, Edgewood, on August 8, 1899, of a cerebral embolism, and was buried near her husband and daughter in Edgefield Cemetery.

He married EMILY (MILLEY) REYNOLDS, daughter of HENRY REYNOLDS. She was born Abt. 1820 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1880.
Notes for EMILY (MILLEY) REYNOLDS:
Emily Reynolds Pickens father, Henry Reynolds, who died 1837 in Hardin Co., Tenn., and whose estate settlement is recorded in "Settlement Book 1836, Page 178".There is a question here: If William married Emily (Milley) who was born in 1820, and the first child was John W. G. Pickens in 1832, Milley would have been only 12 years old at the time of her first child. Between the different researchers there were several options to this piece of the puzzle. The first theory is that John William Gabriel could possibly be the son of William by a prior marriage. Or second, that John William Gabriel was the son of Joseph Pickens and the grandson of John "The Tory".
There is no definite proof one way or the other, however, Jackson Reynolds, in his Family History, has documents that support the second possibility. It is possible that John William Gabriel had been fostered out to William so he could get his education. Again there is no fact one way or the other.
Children of WILLIAM PICKENS and EMILY REYNOLDS are:

Terry (Pickens) McLean calgrups@netscape.net
Hezekiah was previously recorded as the son of Jonathan PICKENS, Jr, of SC and Hardin Co, TN. With the records and information now available to us, including his bible record, it seems the most likely circumstance is that he was the illegitimate son of Ann MIDDLETON. His name and date of birth are written in the bible in the same hand that wrote the dates of Ann's marriages and the birth dates of her CARR children. The thing that now needs to be determined is why, after using the surname of MIDDLETON up until at least 1810, if not longer, to using the surname of PICKENS by the time he married in 1819. - tmc, Apr 2002.
UPDATE: In Sharp's PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, p. 85, Sharp identifies 'Zachariah PICKENS' as a possible son of Gabriel and Mary (SMITH) PICKENS. His information for the structure of Zachariah's family was based on the 1860 census record. In comparing it to what we know now, it is almost certain that 'Zachariah' is actually 'Hezekiah PICKENS' who in actual fact is Hezekiah MIDDLETON. See notes below for Sharp's summary of 'Zachariah's' family - tmc Jun 2002.
DIRECT LINE OF: Barbara Foster; Joyce Reagan; Blake Smith;
CONFLICT: Joyce Reagan email to Terry McLean states they probably married in Alabama. Jamieson Davis records say they married in South Carolina.
Sharp, Reagan and Davis records all name Hezekiah as a child of Jonathan PICKENS Jr. This is now shown to be unlikely - tmc - Apr 2002.

From Barbara Foster to Terry McLean and others, 7 Jun 2002:
"... A few thoughts on the will and related matters--
The name of Hezekiah's father was passed down in my branch (1. Hezekiah
2. David Crockett Pickens) as John PICKENS, Jr. -- my grandmother had that name
in her records as early as 1969.
About 1980 when Hezekiah's Bible was passed down to my dad, we were loaned a copy of THE PICKENS FAMILY (I THINK the one by "Cousin Monroe") that had been written largely in the 1920's, and my family copied the two chapters pertinent to us, 2 and 8.
I notice that the source for our branch was Virgil David Phillips, son of Edney (Edna) PICKENS PHILLIPS and grandson of David Crockett PICKENS. I would suspect that his data for this book was perhaps more reliable than the data he supplied to Sharp,
because 1) he was younger and closer to the dates and events, and 2) his mother was still living (she died in 1939).
Edna was well aware of the existence of Hezekiah's Bible. In fact, on page 46 she and her aunt, Betty Evans (Elizabeth B. PICKENS, who married first John EVANS and later W. BAUCUM) had a grand time signing their names to that page (Edney, who must have been about 8, signed hers as "Edney PICKENS, living"). This alone was not that unusual -- George, David and John MIDDLETON all signed their names in various places, perhaps to register a claim to it someday.
Certainly, the location of John PICKENS Jr.'s family there in Anderson County, the relationships to the PATTERSONs and MIDDLETONs, the fact of his disappearance about the time that Ann's pregnancy would have become obvious, and the apparent desire of his relatives to help the MIDDLETON family by buying items after John MIDDLETON' s death, indicates at least a degree of familiarity between the two.
I wonder if anyone else has been struck by the fact that Hezekiah took the
PICKENS name around the time of his mother's remarriage to Samuel WILSON? Of course he would have been 21 in 1817, but I wonder if he had really at least respected John CARR for all he had done, and resented his mother's remarriage. Rebecca always assumed SHE was a PICKENS by marriage even though Ann had recorded the marriage between "Hezekiah MIDDLETON and Rebecca" , and even recorded her own birth as that of "Rebecca PICKENS" -- which is hardly helpful in determining her OWN lineage!..."

Subject: Hezekiah & 1860 census
Terry and others, [here] is my transcription of the census in question. I viewed it from Ancestry.com. It is for the most part a very clear image, except I was unable to decipher Zachariah/Hezekiah's occupation. I agree with Terry that Zachariah has to be Hezekiah. Note that his son, David "PICKINS", is on the next line. It appears that David's brother-in-laws are in the same household...."
From Barbara Foster:
ABSTRACTS OF OLD NINETY-SIX AND ABBEVILLE DISTRICT WILLS AND BONDS, compiled
by Willie Pauline Young, reprinted 1969 in Liberty, SC.
p. 414. MIDDLETON, HEZEKIAH-BOX 108, PACK 2968
On July 17, 1810, John, Jas. CARR, Thos. PATTERSON bound unto John HAMILTON Ord. Abbeville Dist. sum $1,000.00. John CARR made gdn. of Hezekiah MIDDLETON a minor.
From Doug McQuaid to Terry McLean, and others, 22 Apr 2002:
"... A couple of notes from someone who has researched the MIDDLETON family: The reference in the Hezekiah MIDDLETON guardianship packet to THOMAS PATTERSON as one of the persons bound on the bond is very interesting. Thomas PATTERSON was married to Frances MIDDLETON, sister of Ann MIDDLETON, daugther of John and Elizabeth MIDDLETON. Another link tending to show a relationship to this MIDDLETON family.
In John's [John Carr Pickens] P.S. referencing the probate records of John MIDDLETON, Sr., he lists Samuel PRATER as an Executor. That is not correct. It is SAMUEL PORTER who was the Executor. I have the orginal records and can verify that fact. I have seen other references to these records containing that typo and it has apparently been carried on... Samuel PORTER later inherited from Elizabeth MIDDLETON's estate (wife of John, Sr.) and was probably married to Susannah MIDDLETON, sister of Ann MIDDLETON. He was also Executor of the estate of Theophilus NORWOOD, who was married to Eleanor MIDDLETON, sister of Ann MIDDLETON..."

Born in 1802 in SC. Lt. Hezekiah PICKENS is listed in 1818 as a member of the state militia in Clarke Co., AL. Married in 1819 he is shown of possession of land in Lincoln Co., TN in 1822. ca. 1790 in Abbeville Dist., SC....
"... The census of 1820, 1830 and 1840 of Hardin County shows that he and Polly had at least 11 children. The names of eight of them are known.... [he here names Zachariah, Margaret, William, Patsey, Elizabeth, Lydia, Isariah, and Hannah]...
Gabriel Pickens was in Hardin County, TN in 1820, when the census was made. He had lived at one time in Georgia, as several of his children are known to have been born in Georgia in 1804 and 1805, Izariah was born in 1815 in Georgia, and Lydia was born in Tennessee in 1816, according to 1850 census. Gabriel probably moved to Lincoln Co., Tennessee, about 1816, and to Hardin County around 1818. He is shown in old court minutes in 1819 as being in the county. He received land which was surveyed for him on Rogers Creek, which remained in the family, and probably still belongs to descendants.
The following outline of this family has been reconstructed almost wholly from census records, deeds, court minutes, and marriage records in the court house....
"...Zachariah PICKENS - believed to be one of the two sons of Gabriel PICKENS was in Hardin County in 1860 living at Hamburg on Tennessee River. He was not there in 1850 or in 1870. He had the following family in 1860. [here names 5 children: Polly, Susan, Elizabeth, Richard, Jennette]. There may have been older children married and living elsewhere. Zachariah was certainly somewhere in Tennessee as early as 1833. We place him here because in 1820 Gabriel PICKENS had an unmarried son who was then above 26 years of age. Listed between 26 and 45. There is no record in Hardin County that would indicate any other for a son of Gabriel, who we know was living with him in 1820 in Hardin County..."
p. 87. Martha (Patsey) PICKENS... never married. Her will is recorded in Will Book "B," p. 52, signed by her 20 April 1870. She named her "beloved sisters, Hannah S. PICKENS, Margaret JONES, Elizabeth PHILLIPS, Izzy BIVENS, and Lydia WELSH, and beloved brother William PICKENS and W. COVEY. [this entry seems to indicate that Zachariah, if indeed a child of Gabriel, and a brother to Martha, may be dead by 1870 - tmc].Joyce Reagan to Peggy Mitchell, 6 Aug, 1996:
"... I am also descended from the same line down through Jonathan, Jr. I come from his son, Hezekiah. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know anything about Jonathan's wife, Lydia HARRISON? I have not been able to find her in any HARRISON....Joyce in Bedford TX..."
"... I just realized that I have that Lydia HARRISON's parrents were Jeremiah and Ann HARRISON although I have nothing further..."

Note: PUBLICATION: This publication information is found on the title page of the New Testament "Philadelphia: Printed and published by M. Carey and Son, No. 126 Chestnut Street 1818" - HISTORY: This bible originally belonged to Hezekiah Middleton PICKENS. The earliest notations were apparently made by Ann MIDDLETON CARR, with later notations by Hezekiah's wife, Rebecca. It was passed on to Hezekiah's son David Crockett PICKENS, who later passed it onto his son, Jesse Walker PICKENS. After Jesse's death, the bible was eventually passed on to his daughter, Margaret E. 'Gretchen' PICKENS CHANDLER. Upon Gretchen's death the Bible went to her son Charles Edward CHANDLER. Charles died, and in about 1981 his family gave the bible to the father of Barbara PICKENS FOSTER, so that it could once again reside with a direct descendant who bears the name PICKENS. Mr. PICKENS still has the bible in his possession at this writing (May 2002). - CONDITION: This bible has a deerskin cover - tradition is that it came from a deer shot by Hezekiah. It is possible the deerskin cover was later added by David, as it is inscribed with his name and the '1858'. The bible is in fragile condition. It was water-damaged as the result of a tornado and rainstorm in Gainesville GA in the 1920s. The most severe damage appears to have been to the front of the bible. The title pages have been lost. There are 2 pages titled Family Record (front & back, or 4 total) that contain most of the records. Those pages are located between the Old Testament and the Apocrypha. The other records are written on the back of pages of illustrations. Photocopies have been made of all pages that have family records. In the 1850 census, Hezekiah & Rebecca lived 2 doors down from their son, William Matthew and William lives next door to John Middleton Carr, a half brother to Hezekiah. John M., son of John Middleton, lived next door on the other side of Hezekiah & Rebecca. Two doors away from young John, lived John G. Pickens.
Notes for *REBECCA (REID?) WELLS / WILLS:
Rebecca and Hezekiah's home was located near where the battle of Shiloh was fought and it is told that part of the farm is in the park today.Note from Barbara Foster:
"Nettie", the eldest and illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Pickens and John Evans is the one who was interviewed in the 1930's who recalled Rebecca calmly sewing up a neighbor child's wound as the Battle of Shiloh raged only a short distance away (someday I am going to tell niece Rebecca about her gggg-grandmother and perhaps pass on to her the long red braid in Dad's Bible that was reputed to have belonged to Rebecca). In the 1870 Hardin Co. census, Rebecca was living in the home of her son, John Middleton Pickens and his family. RURAL SHADE, TEXAS. Rural Shade, a farming community on Farm Road 635 twenty miles southeast of Corsicana in southeastern Navarro County, was first settled in 1850 by Hugh and Washington Ingram. A post office was established there in 1858. Around 1870 James Ingram, one of Hugh's sons, built the first steam-powered gristmill in the area. By 1885 Rural Shade consisted of a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, three gristmills, three general stores, four cotton gins, and an estimated population of seventy-five. Two schools were in operation by 1906, with a total enrollment of 145. During the 1930s Rural Shade included a school, two churches, and five or six stores. After World War IIqv its school was consolidated with the Kerens school, and the stores closed. By the mid-1960s only a church and a number of scattered houses remained. In 1990 Rural Shade was a dispersed rural community.

Notes for *ROBERT WILLIAM (BOB) PICKENS:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Robert and "Dutch" married sisters, Jane and Isabell Abney.
In the 1890 tax record R. W. Pickens is listed as owning 50 acres valued at $200. It was the old original grant of J. Salinguah.
Robert was a farmer-carpenter and during world war 1, he and his son Lindsey carried the mail on the Star Route from Edgewood Tx. to Canton, Tx. . In later years he had a peanut machine on the streets of Edgewood and sold hot roasted peanuts. When he retired he was carrying the mail from the post office to the depot.
Robert was my grandfather. He died when I was 4 years old, but I can remember sitting in the porch swing at his house talking to him. I stayed with them for a while when my daddy was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. He used to make walking canes in his shop behind the house (they were always painted black, or at least the ones I ever saw were). He let me use one of them to push on the porch floor to make the swing go (my feet didn't reach the floor). He made a special child size cane just for me and painted it black like the adult canes. I was so proud of it, but it wouldn't reach the floor to make the swing go. I remember wishing that I had the big cane back. The little cane is only a memory now, long gone and no one knows what ever happened to it.....memories by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for *SARAH ISABELL ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Sarah and her sister Jane married brothers "Bob" and "Dutch" Pickens.
Sarah came to Texas at the age of one year in a covered wagon. The family settled in Kaufman Co., Texas. They came to Texas with other families...all related by blood or marriage. They were the Summers (Sarah's grandparents), Abney's (her parents & siblings), and the Glens (her uncles, aunts, & cousins.) a total of 10 wagons were together. See more information on Francis Marion Abney notes.
Mother Pickens was always sweet to me. I stayed at her house for quite a while when I was 3 years old and my dad was in the hospital. I was very small, but I remember her showing me her pretty quilts in her quilt box, calling me into the kitchen for lunch, and home made cookies. She showed me the rose garden and let me pick a rose. (She said not to get any more though). I spent the night with her years later when I was 16. We had a good visit and then she went to bed early. She closed the door between our rooms and told me to stay up as late as I wanted to. That was thoughtful because I have always liked to stay up late. After she was unable to care for herself, my Mom & Dad fixed a room for her at their house with things from her house that she liked. She just refused to stay...wanted to go home. She was unable to care for herself, and she didn't want to live with her children, so she had to go to the nursing home. I sat with her for a day, twice, when she was in the hospital for her last illness. She passed away in a Terrel Tx. Hospital the 2nd of March 1959.....memories by Betty Pickens Phillips

The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
My daddy was Ocie Talmadge "Pas" Pickens. Even though my 3 brothers and my sister called him daddy, I called him Papa. His grandchildren called him Pappy. Mother called him Pas. Papa was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where he attended faithfully after he was baptized at age 63. I remember telling my Aunt Mearl that Papa had been baptized. Her comment was "Thank goodness. He is such a good man. Now he will get credit from God for it." He was a good man, good Christian, and had a knack of making all his family feel that they were his favorite. He was a farmer, feed store owner, and loved to fish and was very good at it. Papa always seemed happy and was always whistling a happy tune. He was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. He died in 1975 of cancer...memories by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for LYDIA CAROLINE (BILL) WADE:
Lydia was the baby of 15 children. She is a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where she still attended faithfully at 96 years of age. When Lydia was a teenager she legally changed her name from Caroline to Bill. When asked (at age 94) why she did this, she said "because it was cute, smart and foxy". She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many of the ladies of Edgewood. She has been a lifelong Edgewood area resident. Lydia is 98 years old, as of the 13th day of April, 2003. Much can be said for those 98 years, but most important is that she was, and is, a Christian. She has lived that life. It has been said that how you live your "dash" (the dash between date of birth and date of death) is what is important. Her "dash" has been lived well......memories by Betty Pickens Phillips

He married (1) ELIZABETH LUCINDA S. "LIZZIE" RUSHING November 12, 1893 in Van Zandt Co. , Tx. (Bk. 5 pg. 427-mar. rec.V.Z. Co., Tx., daughter of JOHN RUSHING and LUISER. She was born August 03, 1876 in Miss., and died February 01, 1933 in Edgewood, Van Zandt Co., Tx. bur. Oak Hill, Edgewood. He married (2) LULA EVINS August 21, 1898 in Van Zandt Co., Tx. (Mar. rec. bk. 7 pg. 10-V.Z.CO., TX.). She died 1936 in Hunt Co..
Notes for RICHARD LINDSAY "DICK" PICKENS:
There are always two sides to a story. Both of the versions of this story came from the Pickens side. It is just family tradition and there may be no truth in either story. None the less, here are the two stories:Story #1: "Dick" & "Lizzie" were married against the wishes of the Rushing parents. Lizzy's parents brought her home, had the marriage annulled, not knowing there was a child on the way. When the baby, Mildred, was born, she went by the Rushing name.
Story #2: "Dick" & "Lizzy" were married for about 3 years and Mildred was two years old when one night some men came to the house, dragged Dick out, carried him off and he was never seen again. Lizzy went back home to her parents and they raised the child, Mildred, with the last name of Rushing.
Now, my part of the story: I went to school in Edgewood from first grade through high school. Mildred worked with her husband at the school. He was the custodian and she worked in the cafeteria. They were both the sweetest people you would ever want to meet. My daddy used to tell me that Mrs. Edwards was kin to me, but being a kid and not interested in genealogy, it just went over my head. I do remember asking how, but he would just say "she is a cousin". She was his first cousin and he was aware of it. Her son married a Neice of my mother. It was a great loss to the town when we lost Mr. & Mrs. Edwards.
A couple of years ago, while researching Richard "Dick" Pickens, I found that he had married again in Van Zandt Co. just five years after the marriage to Lizzy. That doesn't sound like he disappeared forever out of the county....Notes by Betty Pickens Phillips
