Later they moved to Big Spring, Howard Co., Tx., in 1886. John drove a drey wagon (freight wagon) pulled by a large team of mules, haulinf lumber from Lamesa and Colorado City into Big Spring as there was a great demand for lumber for houses. They lived on west First St. where Jesse was born. Annie took sick with the "Bloddy flux" and died. Aquilla remembers his mother sang just before she died, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." In the fall of 1873, a wagon train arrived in Kaufman Co., Tx., from Saline Co., Ill..This train consisted of 13 wagons and was made up of Francis Marion Abney and Sarah Ann "Sally" (Summers) Abney family, Melinda Jane Abney Gordon family (She is a first cousin to Francis. Their mothers were sisters.), Frank Summers(a brother of Sarah Ann Summers) family, and William M. and Elizabeth Jane (sister to Francis M. Abney) Glenn families. These families were all related by blood or marriage. The Glenn family wanted to move to Texas and their loved ones decided to move with them. My grandmother, Sarah Isabell Abney, was 3 years old when she traveled on this wagon to Texas.
The children were taught during the long trip. One of the children learned to count on the trip, as her mother had her count the wagons every day as they were circled at camp time. The wagons were put into a circle every night with the livestock inside an inner circle so the Indians couldn't take them. Although there was a constant watch for Indians, there was no trouble.Francis Marion Abney and his sister, Elizabeth Jane , were descendants of the Abney's that came to the new world, America, in the early 1600's.

Notes for *SARAH ISABELL ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Sarah came to Texas at the age of one year in a covered wagon. The family settled in Kaufman Co., Tx. . They came to Texas with other families....all related by blood or marriage. They were the Summers (Sarah's grandparents), Abney's (her parents and siblings), and the Glens (her uncles, aunts, and cousins). A total of 10 wagons made the trip together. See more info. on Francis Marion Abney notes.
Mother Pickens was sweet to me. I stayed at her house for quite a while when I was 3 years old and my dad was in the hospital. I was very young, but I remember her showing me her pretty quilts in her quilt box, calling me in from play to eat the good meals & homemade cookies in her kitchen. She showed me the rose garden and let me pick a rose (but told me not to get any more). I spent the night with her years later when I was 16. We had a good visit and then she went to bed early. She closed the door between our rooms and told me to stay up as late as I wanted to. That was thoughtful because I have always liked to stay up late. After she was unable to care for herself, my Mom and Dad fixed a room for her at their house with things from her house that she liked. She just refused to stay...wanted to go home. She was unable to care for herself, so she had to go to the nursing home. I sat with her for a day twice when she was in the hospital for her last illness. She passed away in a Terrel Tx. hosp. March 2, 1959....notes by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for *ROBERT WILLIAM PICKENS:
In the 1890 tax record R. W. Pickens is listed as owning 50 acres valued at $200. It was the old original grant of J. Salinguah. Robert was a farmer-carpenter and during World War 1, he and his son Lindsey carried the mail on the Star route from Edgewood Tx. to Canton Tx. . In later years he had a peanut machine on the streets of Edgewood and sold hot roasted peanuts. When he retired he was carrying the mail from the post office to the depot.
Robert was my grandfather. He died when I was 4 years old but I can remember sitting in the porch swing at his home talking to him. I stayed with them for a while when my daddy was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. He used to make walking canes in his shop behind the house (they were always painted black, or at least the ones I ever saw were). He let me use one of them to push on the porch floor to make the swing go (my feet didn't reach the floor). He made a special child size cane just for me and painted it black like the adult canes. I was so proud of it, but it wouldn't reach the floor to make the swing go. I remember wishing that I had the big cane back. The little cane is only a memory now, long gone and no one knows whatever happened to it....notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

The * was added as a note to find our line easier
My daddy was Ocie Talmadge "Pas" Pickens. Even though my 3 brothers and my sister called him Daddy, I called him Papa. His grandchildren called him Pappy. Mother called him Pas. Papa was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ and attended faithfully after he was baptized at age 63. I remember telling my Aunt Mearl that Papa had been baptized. Her comment was "Thank goodness. He is such a good man. Now he will get credit from God for it." He was a good man, good Christian, and had a knack of making all his family feel that they were his favorite. He was a farmer, feed store owner, and loved to fish and was very good at it. Papa always seemed happy and was always whistling a happy tune. He was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. He died in 1975 of cancer...note by Betty Pickens PhillipsNotes for *LYDIA CAROLINE WADE:
Lydia was the baby of 15 children. She is a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where she still attended faithfully at 96 years of age. When Lydia was a teenager she legally changed her name from Caroline to Bill. When asked (at age 94) why she did this, she said "because it was cute, smart and foxy". She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many of the ladies of Edgewood. She has been a lifelong Edgewood area resident. Lydia is 98 years old, as of the 13th day of April, 2003. Much can be said for those 98 years, but most important is that she was, and is, a Christian. She has lived that life. It has been said that how you live your "dash" (the dash between date of birth and date of death) is what is important. Her "dash" has been lived well......memories by Betty Pickens Phillipsvi. He was born February 02, 1874 in Hood Co., Texas, and died September 23, 1914 in Van Zandt Co., Tx. buried Highland Cem..
Notes for EUNICE S. ABNEY:
Eunice married Arthur Hurst in 1901 and was a young widow with three small children by 1914. They had had two children earlier who had died young. Eunice worked very hard trying to provide for herself and her three children, Arthur Lee, Farris, and Elzonia. She took in washing to earn a meager living. In that day and time the laundering was done outside in a large black wash pot. The water was heated by building a fire under the wash pot and usually had a "bar" of homemade lye soap in it to clean the clothes. The water had to be brought from the cistern or well of water or from a stock tank. It was carried one bucket at a time from the source and poured into the pot. A rub board was inserted into the pot with the clothes and the soap was rubbed on the ridges of the rub board and then the clothes were rubbed over the soapy ridges to clean them. Such was the work of this little widow trying to provide for her three children. Eunice was a Baptist.Eunice only lived a year and a half after the death of Arthur. She died of Pneumonia and jaundice. The children of Eunice and Arthur were taken by a sister of Eunice, Jane Abney Pickens. Jane had a house full of children of her own, as well as two of her grandchildren whose mother had died in childbirth, to care for, but looked after the Hurst children as long as she could. She made them each some new clothes and then had to place them in the Buckner Orphans Home just East of Dallas, Texas. The children grew up there.
In the year 2001, one of the grand-daughters of Jane lives next door to one of the grand-daughters of Eunice.---notes by Betty Pickens Phillips, grand Neice of Eunice.
