Subject: John SUMMERS of Fairfax Co., VA
Date: Sun, 08 Sep 1996 13:16:33 -0500

My second SUMMERS line goes back to the SUMMERS family of Fairfax and
Middlesex Counties, Virginia. The line is as follows:

John SUMMERS, Sr.,
born ca. 1660 (in either England or Virginia--one of the things that I am
hoping to find out)--married to Elizabeth THOMPSON (ca. 1660-1694),
daughter of William and Ellen MONTAGUE THOMPSON, on 10-Jan-1675 in
Middlesex Co., VA, and died in 1703 in that same county. John and
Elizabeth THOMPSON SUMMERS were the parents of John SUMMERS, Jr. who was
born in November, 1686 in Middlesex Co., VA and died in Alexandria, Fairfax
Co., VA on 4-Dec-1790. John SUMMERS, Jr. was married to Mrs. Elizabeth
BLAKE LUCAS and among their children was George SUMMERS. This George
SUMMERS seems to have been married to ???Nancy "Ann" Smith??? (who may have been
a daughter of James SMITH of Fairfax Co., VA and sister to Peter, Wm.
Bailey, and Presley SMITH). George and Nancy "Ann" SMITH SUMMERS were the
parents of James, John (1764-1835), and Mary SUMMERS (d. 1808). Mary
SUMMERS married Robert TAYLOR (b. 28-Jul-1758 in Prince William Co., VA and
d. 11-Dec-1851 in Pendleton Co., KY) ca. 1782 in Frederick Co., VA. Robert
TAYLOR was the son of John and Elizabeth SUMMERS TAYLOR. Any help that
anyone can offer on this SUMMERS family will also be greatly appreciated.
I am also happy to share whatever additional information I may have on
either SUMMERS family that I have posted about. Thanks.

Summers Family Cemetery

Located 50 ft. east of the intersection of Deming Ave. and Rte. 613, Lincolnia, Va.

This cemetery contains nine formal monuments and numerous footstones that mark the graves of 26 people. Depressions and other evidence suggests the presence of additional unmarked burials. An 82' x 90' fence surrounds the burials. A 10' x 12' wrought iron fence encloses markers 7 and 9 and a 20' x 25' iron fence surrounds marker 10. The Fairfax County Park Authority cleaned the cemetery, erected the outer fence, and built the trail next to the site in 1989. They now maintain the cemetery, which is clean and well maintained.

Notes for PHARY SUMMERS:
Notes from John summers web site:
http://www.hal-pc.org/~jbsum/family/note_1.html#8

Phary was described by some family members, "Ferris was a wealthy slave owner." It is thought that the pronouncing of Phary Summers was heard as Ferris Summers. Although he was born "Somers", the family changed the spelling when they moved to Tennessee.

Phary and Eliza appeared in Jackson County, Tennessee in the 1850 census along with Ezekial, 8, Eliza, 4, and Mary, 2. On November 27, 1852, he purchased 100 acres of land in Henry County, Tennessee from Shelb Loving and R. D. Caldwell, recorded January 5, 1853 in Henry Co. Deed Records Book K, page 361.

Phary was entered as "Ferry" in the Henry County 1860 census as was his son, Phary D., born Jan 21, 1859, indicating that was how his name was heard by the enumerator.

The Jones Cemetery, Henry Co., Tennessee headstone record for Phary lists him as "Phary" and also appears in that form for one of his sons. (http://www.rootsweb.com/1.782514E-312tndigs/henry/cemetery/jones.htm)

In extensive Paschall information received, Phary was listed as Pharo. His birthday was listed as April 4, 1818. This same information contained Paschall information back to Elisha Paschall, b. Abt 1735, Middlesex County, NJ; d. after 1810, Caswell County, North Carolina

The following names came from discussions with Pharo's great grandson, John H. Summers and do not agree with census findings. The following mapping shows what reconcilation has been made. The unreconciled names will not be added to the list of children but will be kept in Notes for future reference:
Ezekeil Ezekiel
Dodson Phary Dotson (Dot?)
Fanny Thursa Frances
Sarah
Betty Mary Elizabeth (Betty)
Dot
John S. John Stanley

Notes for ELIZA PASCHAL:
The Jones Cemetery, Henry Co., Tennessee headstone record for Eliza lists her parents as E. and T. Paschal. (http://www.rootsweb.com/2.087248E-307tndigs/henry/cemetery/jones.htm). An Elisha Paschall and his family was found in the 1860 Henry County, Tennessee census living in the household adjacent to Ferris and Eliza. His age was 48 at that time. Eliza's age at that time was 40, so it could be inferred that Elisha was Eliza's brother and their father was also named Elisha. This is conjecture at this point.

November 8,1999
Further information was obtained concerning the Paschall line, i.e. E. (father) was Ezekiel and T. (mother) was Thursa Ann Canaday

Children of PHARY SUMMERS and ELIZA PASCHAL are:
i. ELIZA ANN6 SUMMERS.
ii. MARY ELIZABETH SUMMERS.

In the fall of 1873, a wagon train arrived in Kaufman Co., Tx., from Saline Co., Ill..This train consisted of 13 wagons and was made up of Francis Marion Abney and Sarah Ann "Sally" (Summers) Abney family, Melinda Jane Abney Gordon family (She is a first cousin to Francis. Their mothers were sisters.), Frank Summers(a brother of Sarah Ann Summers) family, and William M. and Elizabeth Jane (sister to Francis M. Abney) Glenn families. These families were all related by blood or marriage. The Glenn family wanted to move to Texas and their loved ones decided to move with them. My grandmother, Sarah Isabell Abney, was 3 years old when she traveled on this wagon to Texas.
The children were taught during the long trip. One of the children learned to count on the trip, as her mother had her count the wagons every day as they were circled at camp time. The wagons were put into a circle every night with the livestock inside an inner circle so the Indians couldn't take them. Although there was a constant watch for Indians, there was no trouble.

Francis Marion Abney and his sister, Elizabeth Jane , were descendants of the Abney's that came to the new world, America, in the early 1600's.
Francis is buried in College Mound Cem. in Kaufman Co., Texas. His wife, Sarah, and one of their sons, Thomas, are buried in New Hope Cem. in Van Zandt Co., Texas.

Francis Abney lived in Kaufman Co., Tx. in 1880. In his household, besides his wife and children was his father in-law, John Summers, age 65. (Information from 1880 Kaufman Co. census page 57-po1-Ed. 34) ...Notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

Notes for *SARAH ISABELL ABNEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Sarah came to Texas at the age of one year in a covered wagon. The family settled in Kaufman Co., Tx. . They came to Texas with other families....all related by blood or marriage. They were the Summers (Sarah's grandparents), Abney's (her parents and siblings), and the Glens (her uncles, aunts, and cousins). A total of 10 wagons made the trip together. See more info. on Francis Marion Abney notes.
Mother Pickens was sweet to me. I stayed at her house for quite a while when I was 3 years old and my dad was in the hospital. I was very young, but I remember her showing me her pretty quilts in her quilt box, calling me in from play to eat the good meals & homemade cookies in her kitchen. She showed me the rose garden and let me pick a rose (but told me not to get any more). I spent the night with her years later when I was 16. We had a good visit and then she went to bed early. She closed the door between our rooms and told me to stay up as late as I wanted to. That was thoughtful because I have always liked to stay up late. After she was unable to care for herself, my Mom and Dad fixed a room for her at their house with things from her house that she liked. She just refused to stay...wanted to go home. She was unable to care for herself, so she had to go to the nursing home. I sat with her for a day twice when she was in the hospital for her last illness. She passed away in a Terrel Tx. hosp. March 2, 1959....notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

Notes for *ROBERT WILLIAM PICKENS:
In the 1890 tax record R. W. Pickens is listed as owning 50 acres valued at $200. It was the old original grant of J. Salinguah. Robert was a farmer-carpenter and during World War 1, he and his son Lindsey carried the mail on the Star route from Edgewood Tx. to Canton Tx. . In later years he had a peanut machine on the streets of Edgewood and sold hot roasted peanuts. When he retired he was carrying the mail from the post office to the depot.
Robert was my grandfather. He died when I was 4 years old but I can remember sitting in the porch swing at his home talking to him. I stayed with them for a while when my daddy was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. He used to make walking canes in his shop behind the house (they were always painted black, or at least the ones I ever saw were). He let me use one of them to push on the porch floor to make the swing go (my feet didn't reach the floor). He made a special child size cane just for me and painted it black like the adult canes. I was so proud of it, but it wouldn't reach the floor to make the swing go. I remember wishing that I had the big cane back. The little cane is only a memory now, long gone and no one knows whatever happened to it....notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

Notes for *OCIE TALMADGE"PAS" PICKENS:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier
My daddy was Ocie Talmadge "Pas" Pickens. Even though my 3 brothers and my sister called him Daddy, I called him Papa. His grandchildren called him Pappy. Mother called him Pas. Papa was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ and attended faithfully after he was baptized at age 63. I remember telling my Aunt Mearl that Papa had been baptized. Her comment was "Thank goodness. He is such a good man. Now he will get credit from God for it." He was a good man, good Christian, and had a knack of making all his family feel that they were his favorite. He was a farmer, feed store owner, and loved to fish and was very good at it. Papa always seemed happy and was always whistling a happy tune. He was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. He died in 1975 of cancer...note by Betty Pickens Phillips

Notes for *LYDIA CAROLINE WADE:
Lydia was the baby of 15 children. She is a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where she still attended faithfully at 96 years of age. When Lydia was a teenager she legally changed her name from Caroline to Bill. When asked (at age 94) why she did this, she said "because it was cute, smart and foxy". She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many of the ladies of Edgewood. She has been a lifelong Edgewood area resident. Lydia is 98 years old, as of the 13th day of April, 2003. Much can be said for those 98 years, but most important is that she was, and is, a Christian. She has lived that life. It has been said that how you live your "dash" (the dash between date of birth and date of death) is what is important. Her "dash" has been lived well......memories by Betty Pickens Phillips

She married ARTHUR HURST March 31, 1901 in Van Zandt Co., Tx., son of J E HURST. He was born February 02, 1874 in Hood Co., Texas, and died September 23, 1914 in Van Zandt Co., Tx. buried Highland Cem..

Notes for EUNICE S. ABNEY:
Eunice married Arthur Hurst in 1901 and was a young widow with three small children by 1914. They had had two children earlier who had died young. Eunice worked very hard trying to provide for herself and her three children, Arthur Lee, Farris, and Elzonia. She took in washing to earn a meager living. In that day and time the laundering was done outside in a large black wash pot. The water was heated by building a fire under the wash pot and usually had a "bar" of homemade lye soap in it to clean the clothes. The water had to be brought from the cistern or well of water or from a stock tank. It was carried one bucket at a time from the source and poured into the pot. A rub board was inserted into the pot with the clothes and the soap was rubbed on the ridges of the rub board and then the clothes were rubbed over the soapy ridges to clean them. Such was the work of this little widow trying to provide for her three children. Eunice was a Baptist.

Eunice only lived a year and a half after the death of Arthur. She died of Pneumonia and jaundice. The children of Eunice and Arthur were taken by a sister of Eunice, Jane Abney Pickens. Jane had a house full of children of her own, as well as two of her grandchildren whose mother had died in childbirth, to care for, but looked after the Hurst children as long as she could. She made them each some new clothes and then had to place them in the Buckner Orphans Home just East of Dallas, Texas. The children grew up there.

In the year 2001, one of the grand-daughters of Jane lives next door to one of the grand-daughters of Eunice.---notes by Betty Pickens Phillips, grand Neice of Eunice.

Notes for FARRIS ELMER HURST:
Farris Was put in the Buckner orphans home May 5, 1917 by his Aunt Jane Abney Pickens. He left the home July 1928.

Farris may have been named for Phary Summers (he was called by some as Farris, see notes), the son of Pharoah Sommers, who I think was a son of James. This would make the older Ferris the great uncle of Eunice S. Abney, young Ferris' mother. I know of no other name of Ferris in the family...Note by Betty Phillips
