1. *WADE1 was born Aft. 1560.

Notes for *WADE:
The genealogy project of the Wade Family is my work in progress. Since there is no way to show what is my "best guess" or what is "for sure", you need to judge that for yourself from the notes that I have included. These files are made up of my personal research, and the research of others such as Sally Bryan, Jim Farmer, Helen Battleson, Kelly Hall and other interested people. I have tried, in the most part, not to use material that was not backed up with some reasonable conclusion or source documentation. I have used some "best guesses" and "good assumptions", but I will reconsider them, if I find records that convince me otherwise.

By 1680 some of Edward Wade's family are no longer living in York County but instead have moved just a few miles south to James City County. The reason becomes obvious. Mary Hampton Duke had married Edward Wade sometime after November 1670. She had a large estate in James City that had been given to her by her father, Thomas Hampton. This Estate next to Henry Duke became the home place of the Wades for years.

In 1682, Mary Re-Patented her land as Mrs. Wade. Was she a widow?

Notes for MEMUCAN HUNT:
On page 69 of Probate Records of Cherokee Co., Texas 1846 to 1875, Memucan Hunt was mentioned in the Will of James F. Timmons in 1859 in Cherokee Co., Texas as: "350 acres in Houston Co., Tx. Assignee of Memucan Hunt." This may or may not be the same Memucan Hunt. I have not researched him. Jane Bradberry Hunt was in Cherokee co., Tx. with first husband Madison Hunt. Did they travel with Memucan Hunt?

I found Memucan Hunt in Cooke Co., Tx. in the land grant page with # 449 & # 506. I don't know if that is page, acres or what. Will check more. Jane Bradberry Hunt Brazile was in CookeCo. with husband #2, Henry W. Brazile. Did they travel together?.......notes by Betty Phillips

Hello Friends,
So very much of the information I have on the descendants of Ralph HUNT of
York Co., VA comes from the gedcom known as "Felicia & Clara's File." I try,
in so far as I am able, to confirm for my own satisfaction the information
contained in that file. I have come up with a conflict that I hope Felicia,
Fleetwood or Sandy can resolve for me.

I found the following biography of Memucan HUNT, whom I had been told was "a
general of the army in the Republic of Texas." Apparently he was MUCH more
than that. This biography is taken from "The Handbook of Texas Online" and
is copyrighted by The Texas State Historical Association.

"HUNT, MEMUCAN (1807-1856). Memucan Hunt, legislator and secretary of the
Texas Navy, was born on August 7, 1807, in Vance County, North Carolina. He
engaged in planting and business until 1834, when he removed to Madison
County, Mississippi. In 1836 he volunteered his services to Texas, where he
arrived shortly after the battle of San Jacinto. President David G. Burnet
appointed him brigadier general in August 1836 to meet an expected invasion
from Mexico, but the danger soon passed, and Hunt resigned his commission.
President Sam Houston appointed Hunt agent to the United States to assist
William H. Wharton in securing the recognition of Texas. That task
successfully accomplished in March 1837, Hunt became Texan minister at
Washington. His proposal of annexation in 1837 was rejected by the United
States, but he succeeded in negotiating a boundary convention in 1838.

Under President Mirabeau B. Lamar, Hunt was secretary of the navy from
December 1838 to May 1839, when he became the Texas representative on the
joint United StatesTexas boundary commission. In 1841 he was an
unsuccessful candidate for vice president. He was inspector general of the
army and then adjutant general in the Somervell expedition in 1842. He
served briefly in the Mexican War. After annexation he served one term in
the legislature, 1852, and in 1853 he was appointed United States
commissioner to adjust the southwestern boundary. He spent his last years
trying to recoup his fortune, which he had sacrificed in the cause of Texas.
The legislature granted him full compensation in land. To develop his
holdings he promoted a railroad from Galveston Bay to Red River. While he
was thus engaged, his health failed, and he died at his brother's home in
Tipton County, Tennessee, on June 5, 1856. Hunt County, Texas, was named for him.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: William Campbell Binkley, ed., Official Correspondence of the
Texan Revolution, 1835-1836 (2 vols., New York: Appleton-Century, 1936).

Garrison (3 parts, Washington: GPO, 1908-11). Amelia W. Williams and Eugene
C. Barker, eds., The Writings of Sam Houston, 1813-1863 (8 vols., Austin:
University of Texas Press, 1938-43; rpt., Austin and New York: Pemberton
Press, 1970)."

Here is my conflict: Felicia & Clara's File gives Memucan's birth as August
7, 1807 in Oxford, Granville Co., NC, and the biography states August 7,
1807, in Vance Co., NC. I don't feel this is a major conflict as county
lines change through the years. Felicia & Clara's File gives his death as
1859, in Tipton Co., TN at his brother's house. The biography states he died
June 5, 1856 at his brother's home in Tipton Co., TN; a difference of three
years. Also, he is said to have married a Miss Anna Howard in 1859. If that
were so, then he could not have died in 1856.

Don't ya just love it!!

Notes for *SARAH TINSLEY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.

It is my best guess that Sarah Tinsley was the second wife of John Wade even though it is not proven because:

The time was right and everything including names, ages, and time line fit.

Elizabeth Tinsley, sister to John Tinsley, married Drury Allen. Drury would have been Sarah's uncle. John Wade's son Allin, named a son Drury Allen Wade. This child's name, if he is Sarah Tinsley's grandson, would match the name of Sarah Tinsley's uncle. There is no "Drury" on John's side of the family. Drury Allen named a son David Allen. John & (?Sarah) named a son David and a son Allin. John & (?Sarah)'s son Allin named a son David and another Drury Allen.

When Andrew Wade was apptd. gdn. of the younger children of John Tinsley, after the death of John Tinsley, Sarah was not included so she was probably already married, or could have been over 14 years old at the time. She could have lived at the home of her mother and step-father, Andrew Wade, without having him appointed a guardian if she was over 14. The Tinsley's and Wade's in Halifax Co. had a lot of connections.

The Wades and Tinsleys both lived in Halifax Co., Va. and knew each other because of Andrew Wade being related to John.
John Wade did not mention his wife's name in his will, but they did have a son named Tinsley who was named in the will.

Another son, Allin, of John Wade who was mentioned in John's will, had a grandson named William Tinsley Wade (my grandfather).
.....notes by Betty Pickens Phillips

Marriage Notes for *JOHN WADE and *SARAH TINSLEY:
Sarah probably married after 1762 because her father's will, recorded in 1762, named her Sarah Tinsley. She was still single.

Notes for *ALLIN WADE:
The* was added as a note to find our line easier.

Records that I found on census and other documents indicate that Allin and Polly had 13 children in all. There were 9 males and 4 females. Our George Boxley Wade was one of them. At the time of the death of Allin in 1835 and Mary Polly in 1839, there were minor children still in the home. I have the estate records where Thomas Denny was awarded the children as Wards at the death of Mary in 1839 to the time they left in 1841. I've found no records yet of where they went or what their names were. I believe them to be at least one boy and one girl, possiably two girls and one boy. They could be the younger children of Allin and Mary, who were born between 1825 and 1830. They also might be the older children of Allin, son of Mary & Allin, and his first wife, Cresey Vaughan. More research needed. ...notes by Betty Phillips

Letter from Charley Wade -- CWade14532@aol.com -- CBWADE14532@DIRECWAY.COM -- CBWADE@DIRECWAY.COM

Betty,

Hope you are doing well and survived the holidays.

I believe I told you that I was doing some volunteer work at the Family History Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. I recently ordered microfilm on Person County and the first batch that I'm going through is Wills, Inventories and Taxables that span 1792-1876. Presently I'm working on 1792 to 1807.

I don't know what the information on the Taxable List stands for, so will have to do some research. There are four columns of info: Land, W. Polls, B. Polls, S. Horses. On the 1801 list they also have Spirits.

Person County, North Carolina, Taxables
Nash District for the year 1801
Wade, Allen Land - 0, W Polls - 1, B Polls - 3, S Horses - 0, Spirits - 0

Person County, North Carolina, Taxables, Page 217
List of Taxables in Capt. Penia's Company for the year 1803
Wade, Allin Land - 200, W Polls - 1, B Polls - 2, S Horses - 0

Person County, North Carolina, Taxables, Page 320
List of Taxables in Capt. Jones Company for the year 1804
Wade, Allan Land - 200, W Polls - 1, B Polls - 3, S Horses - 0

The above could indicate that Allin Wade moved from Halifax County, VA to Person County, NC in 1800 to be on the 1801 Taxable List.

So far, the only other Wade's to appear on the lists are Robert and Josiah. Robert, I believe is my 5th great-grandfather, who married Rebecca Downey. Not sure about Josiah.

The other batch of microfilms I have are the Record of Deed 1789-1901 for Person County. I know that you sent me the abstracts, but I decided I would like to have the whole document where my family was party to the buying and selling. I will continue to use the abstract info where they were a witness to a transaction.

As I find more, will let you know.

Charley
=================
I guess I should have looked at the attachments before sending the last e-mail. There still might be a Guardian record on Thomas Denny, because on the last line of the dispursement of funds, there is a reference to a Guardian Bond, which would have had to be approved in court. I will keep my eyes open for more info.

In the Taxable Property I have learned a little more about what was taxed and there are a couple of new one's:
Land - 200 refers to the number of acres
W. Polls - White Polls (still not sure of meaning)
B. Polls - Black Polls (still not sure of meaning)
S. Horses - Refers to Stud Horses
C. Machines - Refers to Cotton Machines
R. Goods - Refers to Retail Goods (such as a store)
R. Spirits - Refers to Retail Spirits (such as a liquor store)

On the following records there are no Horses, Cotton Machines, Goods or Spirits.

Apparently, Person County was broken into eight (8) districts and these Captains were responsible for doing the Taxable Property inventory. I would love to have a map showing these districts, which could narrow precisely where the Wade's were located. I don't know if these Captain's were military or perhaps militia, which were referred to as Captains:
Person County, North Carolina - Districts in 1808
Capt. Chambers Company
Capt. Streets Company
Capt. Days Company
Capt. Hubbards Company
Capt. Paines Company
Capt. Raines Company
Capt. Leas Company
Capt. Ollivers Company

I had hoped to have more, but the last few years were mixed up alphabetically, so I had to really concentrate on each page.

Here is another year for Allin.

I didn't see him in the 1810 lists, so he must have been missed.

Betty, Benjamin and Josiah Wade, do you know where they fit in with Allin. I saw Josiah in the Taxable Property list.

==================

The legal age for males was 21 and the legal age for women was 18 for them to be emancipated from their parents. This also applied for land ownership. The times were very sexist, as women did not have many rights. The reason for the distinction of Black to White Polls was not only a sign of coming of age, but paying poll tax was essentially establishing to right to vote on community issues. Blacks did not have that priviledge; thus the distinction. The owners had to pay a taxes on the adult black males; not so for under age black males and for women of any race.

In keeping with the US Constitution's 2nd amendment that "a well-regulated militia was necessary to the security of a free state" local militia units where formed from various areas of each county. Officers were elected. These militia units were also handy as a unit of taxation...each captain was required to account for the number of poll, literally heads, in his unit. To be eligible for the militia and to be taxed, there were age requirements. Often you will see the amount of acreage owned by the man, along with the number of black polls, male slaves, that he owned in the tax list. Muster day was a festive event. Taking place at least yearly, probably according to local custom. Much competition and drilling between different units. Over the years muster day evolved into a day of drinking, gambling, cussing, bad behavior, etc... and eventually was discontinued. When I can't say. I don't know if it was at different times in different locations, or mandated by the state. As far as where the districts were...I would imagine that there were not strict boundaries, governed more by the number of elegible men in the area. Your best bet as far as finding where each captains' district was would be to check some deeds of the era, looking for clues to location such as creeks in the area. I'm not a North Carolinian, just a history teacher in Ks, so I'm sure someone from the area can give a better picture of what happened in North Carolina than I.

And while we are on the subject, agian does anyone know when the militia system was discontinued in Person. We have an old family letter from the 1920's with the only clues we have to our Person County Heritage. Much of it is erroneous, but most of it has some basis in fact. Just off by a hundred yrs or so!! the letter makes mention of Person County Militia in the Mexican American War, ca 1848, setting off to march to Mexico, but by the time they got to Appomatox (to the north!) the war was over. Could they have been marching to DC to volunteer instead? anything in that tale seem true to anyone?

Notes for *MARY (POLLY) BOXLEY:

Mary had a meager $26.34 left when she died, for the Wards left in the guardianship of Thomas Denny. I think the Denny family married into the Wade family that was connected to Allin in some way. Thomas Denny's sisters, Nancy and Polly married Benjamine & Josiah Wade. Josiah and Robert Wade witnesses Benjamine's wedding. Thomas Denny, born abt. 1795 & married Martha Brown Williams, would have been about ther same age of the older children of Allin who were born between 1795 & 1810. I'll see if I can find any more records on Thomas Denny...Betty

GEORGE BOXLEY WADE
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.

As descendants of George Boxley Wade, we have tried to find "Our George" for years. I knew from the records from the Family Bible of Jane (Bradberry) Hunt Brazile Wade that George had been born in Virginia. Near the end of July in 2000, I happen to see a list of Wade marriages from Halifax Co., Virginia. In that list there was a Boxley girl and a Wade boy being married. Their wedding was after our George was a grown man, but it got me to thinking about the Boxley name. Could George's mother's maiden name have been Boxley? I then checked in the records around the time that would have been George's parents. The very first listing was for an Allin Wade and Mary Polly Boxley married 13 March 1794. The marriage records were put on the I-net by Kelly Hall. I then found a posting by Sally Bryan, who mentioned the Tinsley family in connection with Allin and Polly. With my grandfather being named William Tinsley Wade, there had to be a connection. I spent time at the Van Zandt Co. Genealogy library looking for more information on census, school, cemetery, probate, marriage, orphan, tax records, Wills etc. . Sally Bryant also gave me some information that had been well researched and documented.
Although it is not Proved, I believe George Boxley Wade to be the son of Allin Wade (I found his signature and it was Spelled "Allin Wade") and Mary "Polly" Boxley for these reasons:

Allin & Polly were the right age and married at the right time and place to have been his parents. The census records for Allin & Polly show a male child the correct age.

George was born in Va. in 1806 (1880 Van Zandt Co. census states that George's parents were born in Va.) and Allin and Polly were born in Halifax Co. Va. and were married in Halifax Co. Va. on 13 March 1794.

All 9 of George & Elizabeth's children were named same names as parents, grandparents, or siblings of Polly & Allin.

Polly's grandfather and her brother were both named George Boxley.

Polly had a brother named William. Allin's mother's maiden name was Tinsley. Allin had a brother named Tinsley. George named a son William Tinsley.

George named one of his sons David Allen, perhaps for his father, Allin, and Allin's brother David.

Allin had sisters named Jane and Ann and an Aunt named Mary Ann. Polly's name was Mary. George named one daughter Jane Ann and one Mary.

Polly had a sister named Lucy. George named one daughter Lucy.

Allin's father and a son of Allin, were named John. George named a son John, perhaps for his brother and grandfather.

Allin had a brother named Edmund and an uncle named Edward. George named one son Edward and another son Edmond.

I will do further research on Polly & Allin but I believe them to be the parents of George Boxley Wade...notes by his great granddaughter Betty Phillips

It is believed that George & Elizabeth may have married in Hickman Co., Tenn about 1836 or 37, but Hickman County courthouse burned during the civil war and all records prior to that date are lost.

Tishomingo County Mississippi July term 1837

On Monday the fourth of July, the lowest bidder would be chosen to build a county jail in the town of Jacinto. The contract was awarded S.M. CARSON for the sum of $3,957, who filed a bond in the sum of $7,914, with W.B. FROST, D.W. HYNEMAN and Francis KIZER as sureties. John REEVES, C.D. KEY and Mathew GAGE were appointed to superintend the building of the jail on the part of the county.

George CHAMNESS was appointed overseer of a road commencing at the county line near Samuel SPAIN'S place, and extending to Mitchell creek with the following hands: Solomon CARTER, Joseph CARTER, David CARTER, George WADE, Richard WINN, James HARRIS, Elisha ARMES, William COATES, John USSERY, William P. POWELL, John SWAIN, Jr., Wilson WINN, George WILLIAMS, Moses WINTERS, Washington GRAHAM and Absolem LOONEY (note by Betty...David Carter was George's father-in-law and Soloman & Joseph were his brother's-in-law)

George was first located in the 1837 Tishomingo Co., Miss. census. He was listed as having 3 in the household. That would have been George, Elizabeth, and Jane Ann.

In the 1840 census, same Co., he is listed as 1 male 20-30 and 1 female 20-30 and 2 females under 5. This would be George, Elizabeth, Jane Ann and Lucy.

1840 Tishomingo Co., Miss. census, George, Elizabeth and their children were living next door to Doroth (Dorothea) Carter, who was the second wife of Elizabeth's father, David. Two doors down from Doroth was Soloman Carter, Elizabeth's brother.

======================

1850 Tishomingo Co., Miss. census, George Wade as head of household, age 45, born Va. , Elizabeth age 37 born Tenn., J. Ann age 12 born Miss., Lucy age 10 born Miss., Mary age 9 born Miss., Allen age 7 born Miss., John age 6 born Miss., William age 3 born Miss., Edmond age 4mo. born Miss..

In the 1860 census of Wood Co., Texas we find George Wade age 54 farmer born Va., Elizabeth age 47 born Miss., Jane age 22 born Miss., Lucy age 20 born Miss., Mary age 19 born Miss., Allen age 16 born Miss., John age 14 born Miss., William age 12 born Miss., Edward age 7 born Miss., Nancy age 8 born Miss. . There was also a Jacob Jones age 25 listed as a laborer living in the household.

In the Van Zandt Co., Texas 1870 census : George B. Wade age 60 born Va., Lucy age 27 born Miss., Allen age 26 born Miss., John 24 born Miss., William 21 born Miss., Nancy 17 born Miss., Edward age 15 born Miss. . (Elizabeth died in 1862)

The 1880 Van Zandt Co., Texas census lists G. B. Wade age 73, born in Va. and both parents born in Va., as head of household, wife, Jane age 50 born in Tenn. and not knowing where her parents were born, Malissa Brazile age 14, born Tx. and both parents born in Tenn., (Malissa died shortly after and is buried by her mother Jane in the Gilbert Cem. Van Zandt Co., Tx.) John Kuykendall age 5 born Tx., mother born Tx., father born Tn. ( John's mother was Maryann, the oldest child of Jane. Maryann died in childbirth and Jane raised her two children, John and Tom Kuykendall). A laborer was also living in the household. His name was Ed Carl age 18 born in La. and not knowing where his parents were born.
Jacob Jones and wife Jane Ann,(daughter of George and Elizabeth) and four of their children, were living next door with four of their children in the Van Zandt Co., Tx. 1880 census. (Jacob was living in the George Boxley Wade household in 1860 in Wood Co., Texas. He may have come to Texas with the Wade family.)

George, Elizabeth and their 8 children were listed in the 1860 Wood Co., Texas census. Sometime during the next two years, they settled in the Cedar Grove Community in Van Zandt Co., Texas. Elizabeth died 21 March 1862. At the time Elizabeth died, her oldest child was 24 and her youngest child was 7. They had moved to Cedar Grove near Wills Point before 21 March 1862. Since there was a child buried in Cedar Grove shortly before Elizabeth, It is possiable that she died with complications from the birth of that child. Elizabeth died within 2 years of moving to Cedar Grove and the child died before her.

In the 1870 Van Zandt Co., Texas census, George showed up with children, but not Elizabeth. George and Elizabeth are buried there, in the Cedar Grove Community, as is one of their sons, Edward Walter and his family. Walter is buried in the Howell Cemetery, East about one fourth of a mile across the pasture from the burial place of George & Elizabeth.

Tradition says that when Elizabeth died, George insisted on burying her in a pasture beside their house by one of their babies (Could have been a grandchild). He did this against the will of their children. When George died, his children buried him in the pasture beside Elizabeth. Years later when Twakoni Lake was being built, a road was to be moved. The new location was to cross over the graves , or near the graves of George and Elizabeth. The Highway dept. notified some of the family, who told two of George's great grandsons, Doug Pickens (my brother) & Wade Robertson (grandson of Leona (Wade) Robertson), of the problem. Wade & Doug talked to Doug's mother, Lydia (Wade) Pickens, one of the grand children of the George Wade couple, about what to do. Together they decided to move the gravestone parts (They were all broken up from cattle walking on them and from wear from age.) and reassemble them in the Morence cemetery beside one of George & Elizabeth's sons, William Tinsley Wade. There was not a marker of any kind found for the infant child of George & Elizabeth at that time. The child's grave is located near Lake Twakoni, as are the remains of George & Elizabeth. Had the stones not been moved, they might have been forever lost. There is a mistake on his name on the stone. It says G. W. Wade instead of G. B. Wade. The same mistake was made on his name on his stepdaughter, Malissa's stone. It reads "Malissa Dau. of G. W. & J. Bruzell. At the time of her death, George was her stepfather. Her biological father was Henry Bruzell and he had already passed away. Jane, George's second wife, was Malissa's mother.

George stayed single for ten years after Elizabeth died in 1862. George married Jane Bradberry Hunt Brazile on 5 May 1872. Jane was the mother of Luvisa Hunt (William Tinsley Wade's) first wife, who only lived eleven months after the marriage. Jane was also mother to Lydia Caroline (Brazeale), William's second wife and mother to his 15 children. George was William Tinsley's father. George was also the father of David Allen Wade who married Jane's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Hunt and George was the father of John Daniel Wade who married Jane's daughter, Eliza Jane Brazile. So you see, three of George's sons married four of Jane's daughters.......notes by their great granddaughter, Betty Phillips

(note added later): The highway department did not after all, as they said that they would, go into the pasture and over the graves to make the road. The graves are very close to the road, just inside a fence, on private property, under a cedar tree.

The original information on the location of the graves of George and Elizabeth and the child they were buried by, has been proven to be true. In July of 2001, B. W. Wade, son of Buck Winn Wade and great grandson of George and Elizabeth, decided to reclaim the graves of his great grandparents. He talked to the owners of the property where the Wades were buried and gained permission to fence off the area where the graves are located.

B. W. and I went to the grave-site and using divining rods,I found the three graves. The divining rods are just simply copper or brass welding rods, (either will work) which have been bent in a right angle about eight inches from the end to form a handle. By walking over an area where the ground has been disturbed, and holding the rods level in front of you, they will cross when you reach the edge of the grave and uncross when you reach the other side. There is a simple explanation for this. The magnetic field was disturbed when the earth was dug into and this causes the reaction in the rods. We found the concrete pieces of the Child's gravestone on its grave.

Today's date is Aug. 1, 2001 and the gravestone of George and Elizabeth has been returned to the grave site. B. W. Wade built a form for the concrete and Doug Pickens did the concrete slab for the broken pieces of the gravestones to rest on. The other descendants of George and Elizabeth will be contacted and given an opportunity to help with a new stone to be placed at the head of the grave.

Notes for *ELIZABETH CARTER:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
In the 1840 Tishomingo Co., Miss. census, Elizabeth and George and their children were living next door to Elizabeth's father's second wife, Dorthea. Two doors down from Dorthea, was Elizabeth's brother Soloman Carter.
..note by her great granddaughter, Betty Phillips

It is beleived that George & Elizabeth may have married in Hickman Co., Tenn about 1836 or 37, but Hickman County courthouse burned during the Civil War and all records prior to that date are lost.

More About *GEORGE WADE and *ELIZABETH CARTER:
Marriage: Bef. 1838, probably Hickman Co.,Tenn.
Marriage Fact: It is beleived that George & Elizabeth may have married in Hickman Co., Tenn abo

Notes for *JANE BRADBERRY:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
Jane was born in Tenn. She married Madison Hunt 27 Feb. 1847 in Blunt Co., Tenn. . Their children, Maryann, James and Sarah were born in Blunt Co., Tenn.. The next three, William , Louvisa and Thomas were born in or near Henderson, Rusk Co., Tx.. Madison was a surveyor and had several land grants in Texas. His place of death is probably Texas, but it is unknown where. They had moved to Texas with Madison's parents and siblings. Madison died by 1858 according to probate records of his father, Thomas Hunt Sr. .

A story told to me by my mother, Lydia Caroline Wade Pickens, which was told her by her mother Lydia Caroline Brazile Wade, about the travels of Jane goes like this: Jane, a widow at the time, was making her way across Texas in a covered wagon with her children. Right after they started on their journey, an old Indian started following them. At meal time he would come on up to the camp and eat with them. He never bothered them and he never rode along with them, just followed, as if to help protect them. I remember this story being told me as a child. My 95 year old mother just retold me the story in Aug. of 2000...note by her great granddaughter, Betty Phillips

Jane's daughter, Maryan, was born 7 Jan. 1848, in Blount Co. Tenn. She married Rouze Kuykendall on 22, July, 1865. Maryann died in childbirth on 20, Feb. 1876. Jane raised Maryan's two sons. Their names are Tom & John Kuykendall. More about them on their page.

Four of Jane's daughters married three of George Boxley Wade's sons. William Tinsley Wade married Luvisa Hunt, who only lived 11 mo. after their marriage. Six years later he married Luvisa's half sister Caroline Brazile who was only 16 years old.
One day when Jane was staying home with Lydia Caroline's children and fixing lunch for them, Melissa, the 11 year old daughter of William & Caroline got hungry before lunch was ready, and before the adults had gotten back home to eat. Melissa pinched the bread and got scolded by Jane. My 94 year old mother,
Lydia, told me this story in 1999. Jane was Lydia's Grandmother but she never knew her. The story was told her by her sister Melissa many years ago....note by her great granddaughter, Betty Phillips

Van Zandt Co., Texas 1870 Census lists as head of household : Jane Brazul age 41 born Tenn., children: Sarah age 18 born Tx., William C. 16 born Tx., Thomas M. age 13 born Tx., Liddy C. age 9 born Tx., Elizabeth age 8 born Tx. Malissa age 4 born Tx. (Elizabeth was not mentioned in Jane's Bible unless she was called Eliza. There is a 2 year age difference between Elizabeth (in the census) and Eliza (In Jane's Bible).

In Jane's Bible she had also listed as one of her children, Adaline Bruzele born 24 Jan 1863. There was no death date given. No further information found on Adaline.

Van Zandt Co., Tx. Federal Census of 1880 lists: G. B. Wade age 73 farmer born Va. and both his parents born in Va., Jane age 50 born in Tenn. and not knowing the place of birth of parents, Malissa Brazile age 14 born in Tx. and both her parents born in Tenn., (Malissa died 2 years later at the age of 16. She is buried in Gilbert Cem. by her mother.) John Kuykendall age 5 Born in Tx. and both his parents born in Tenn. (Jane was raising him. His mother was a daughter of Jane and Madison Hunt, Maryan, who had died in childbirth. Jane also raised John's brother Tom.) In the household was also listed Ed Carl age 18 laborer born in La.

On 5 July 1872 Jane married George Boxley Wade, Who was already the Father-in Law to 2 of Jane's daughters, Louvisa, who had died and Eliza who had married John Daniel Wade. Later 2 more of his sons, William Tinsley Wade and David Allen Wade, and her daughters, Caroline Brazile and Sarah Hunt would marry.

Jane died during the time that her son, William C. Hunt, was being tried as an accessory to the murder of Chestley Parker, the husband of Jane's sister, Mary (Bradberry) Parker. I have the transcript of the trial and it was clear from the testimony given by the sons and a nephew of Chestley, that Chestley started the quarrel and was beating William with a large stick. William never fired a shot. A man named Ladd who was with William shot Chestley in the side. Chestley continued to fight William after Lad shot him. Parker died about 5 hours later of the gunshot wound. William was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to two years of hard labor in the Texas State Prison and died there in 1889. Jane had suffered many loses. Besides the loss of her sister, Mary Bradberry Parker, by a stroke in 1874, she had lost three husbands, and 6 of her children who were: Maryan Hunt Kuykendall, James K. Hunt, Sarah Elizabeth Hunt Wade, Luvisa Hunt Wade, Adaline Brazeal, and Molissy Brazeal. She only had four children left who were; Thomas Madison Hunt, William C. Hunt, Lydia Caroline Brazeal, and Eliza Jane Brazeal Wade, and now William was being tried for accessory to the murder of the husband of Jane's sister's husband. Jane's Heart was broken by all she had endured. She died at the age of 59 on the 6th of Oct. 1877, about the time the trial started........ notes by her great granddaughter...Betty Phillips

Jane Bradberry is buried in the Gilbert cemetery, a pretty place, nicely kept, (privately owned) which is located about 4 or 5 miles north of Edgewood, Van Zandt Co., Texas. I took pictures of the gravestones and cemetery in 2000. Buried beside her are her daughters, Louvisa Hunt Wade and Molissa Brazile and a grandson, son of W. T. & Caroline, George Willis Wade. The baby was apparently named for his two grandfathers, George Boxley Wade and Henry Willis Brazile.

In the 1920's Tom or John Kuykendall had a very nice gravestone erected for his grandmother Jane Wade who raised him. This says to me that she was good to him and he loved her very much. Jane had a hard life but when she died, she left a lot of people who loved her. I wish I had known her.........notes by her great granddaughter, Betty Phillips

Notes for LUCY H. WADE:
Lucy had an Uncle named Harrison Boxley. I wonder if the H. in her name is for him...note by Betty Phillips

Notes from Patricia Ann Porter Wilson: Notes : I had her last name as Harrison, so there's little doubt what the H stood for). I don't know the exact date of the Walton's move from Person Co. down to Stewart Co., GA but think, now, that it may have been as late as 1850. The Walton family is well enumerated in the 1840 Person Co. census and there is also a listing for a James Walton in the 1850 census there (no breakdown). At any rate, James is dead in Georgia by 1855 and one (not terribly reliable) source says he is buried in the Northside Methodist Cemetery in Lumpkin, but has no stone. (I looked in 1999 and found nothing, but did find a Walton child stone with no other info). At the time of James' death, daughter, Mary is already married so Lucy is left with son, Robert and daughters Annie & Clementine. Annie marries by 6/1855 and Clementine in 2/1856. Don't know about Robert's marriage. After the death of Clementine's first husband (Dewitt Thornton), Lucy is found in the 1860 census living with her and granddaughter Nellie Thornton. Some family lore says Lucy continued to live with Clementine after her 2nd marriage to Jesse Fulgum and moved with them to TN & died there. I have some doubts however about that. I think it somewhat unlikely that her son, Robert Walton would move off to TX by 1874 (before his sister's second marriage) if his mother was living.

Notes for JAMES H. WALTON:
According to the 1850 Person Co. N. C. census, James was a trader. He was still in Person Co. N.C. in 1850...Note by Betty Phillips

"Eureka, Texas -By Whitney Montgomery
Originally published in "The Navarro County Scroll", 1961, Reprinted with permission of the
Navarro County Historical Society
There were four Johnson families who were pioneers of the Eureka community. Some may have
spelled it Johnston or Johnstone. These were Tom, Dave and two Bob Johnsons. The two Bob
Johnsons were knows as "Colonel Bob" and "Mud Hose Bob" (The later nickname having been
derived from a mudhole which existed in front of his house).

"Mud Hole Bob" left Eureka when I was a boy, and I have never heard of him since. "Colonel
Bob"and his wife, who was called "Aunt Chick" by her friends, reared seven children; Sam,
Will, Gene, Emma, Walter, Bob and Henry. None of the children are living, but several of the
grandchildren are still living. Emma, the only daughter, married Charley Walton, of Corsicana, who
was the son of Judge Walton who was a Judge in Corsicana for many years.

Robert was in Texas by 1874 " THE STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF NAVARRO Before me

have hereunto set my hand and attached my seal of office at my office in Corsicana, Texas, the day
and year above written and I further certify that the said Eli Philips in unknown to me and that he
made himself known to me- as being the identical man that he represents himself to be.

70. MARY ALLEN (ALLIN?)9 WALTON (LUCY H.8 WADE, *ALLIN7, *JOHN6, *ROBERT WADE5 SR., *ANDREW WADE4 L, *EDWARD II3 WADE, *EDWARD2, *WADE1) was born 13 Apr 1838 in N. C., and died 17 Jan 1884. She married CLEMENT ANSLEM EVANS 15 Feb 1854. He was born 25 Feb 1833, and died 02 Jul 1911.

Notes for MARY ALLEN (ALLIN?) WALTON:
Notes from Patricia Ann Porter Wilson: (Notes re Mary & Clement Evans. You can find Clement in various sources on the "net":. He is cited
as an attorney-at-law in a "notice of sheriff's sale" in an 1857 "GA Plaindealer" newspaper (Stewart
Co.): He was made a CSA General in the last months of the Civil War and became a minister and
author after the war. He wrote Military History of GA and edited the 13 volume Confederate
Military History.
I have very nice undated (ca 1890's) letter from Clement to his niece (my g-gma), Nellie Thornton
Porter. Most of the above "family info" is circa 1951 when a great-aunt of mine was corresponding
with Lucy Evans Stephens.

71. CLEMENTINE MINERVA9 WALTON (LUCY H.8 WADE, *ALLIN7, *JOHN6, *ROBERT WADE5 SR., *ANDREW WADE4 L, *EDWARD II3 WADE, *EDWARD2, *WADE1) was born 15 Oct 1839 in N. C., and died 1917 in McKenzie, TN. She married (1) DEWITT CLINTON THORNTON 13 Feb 1856 in GA. He was born 26 Oct 1828, and died 05 Nov 1858. She married (2) JESSE MERCER FULGUM 27 Jun 1872 in GA. Probably Stewart Co.. He was born 1837 in Ga., and died 1915 in Tn..

Notes for CLEMENTINE MINERVA WALTON:
Notes from Patricia Ann Porter Wilson: (Notes Re Clementine Walton Thornton Fulgum). His G-Gma Clem was a favorite of my Father's (James T. Porter, Jr. born 1904, Clem died 1917) and he remembered taking the train from Paris, TN down to McKenzie to visit. Clementine's life was far from easy but she was apparently an easy-to-love, survivor. Some of her story is tied in, of course, with that of her mother, Lucy, above. She married Dewitt Thoronton in Feb 1856 and he died just 2 1/2 years later.( '58 was a banner year for her, death of her first child in April, birth of her 2nd in August and death of her husband in November!) After Dewitt's death Clem, her daughter, Annie & Lucy lived together in the town of Lumpkin, GA. Clem (and maybe Lucy too?) supported the family by giving music lessons. She had been left some assets by Dewitt Thornton and his family was large and I believe helpful. Clem remained widowed for 13 years and, as I mentioned above I don't know if Lucy survived until her daughter's 2nd marriage. (an aside here re religion - James Walton was reported a Methodist and if Clem had been I expect her "change" to Baptist came with her marriage to Dewitt. The Thornton's were long-time Baptists). At any rate, in June of 1872 Clementine married Jesse Fulgum, the new, widowed minister (one small child who later died) of the Lumpkin Baptist Church. After their marriage they led the typical ministerial life with lots of moves (Lumpkin>Thomasville, GA>several towns in TN and then finally McKenzie TN). At some point -as noted under the Colliers - Clem's sister, Annie's child lived with them. Clem & Jesse's house was always full of children for sure.

On her death in 1917, Clementine left a small black trunk filled with memorabilia and she had kept all of the early material from her first marriage to Dewitt Thornton. I have copies of his love letters to her, general family letters, a set of great letters related to some Thornton descendants who moved Dewitt's grave in the 1890's (Clem was piss...t) a metal nameplate of his, etc. While she had a long, good life with Jesse Fulfgum and lots more kids I suspect she never really let go of the early romance. Unfortunately she lived to see the child she had raised pretty much on her own and only Thornton child, Nellie, die before she did in 1896.

Notes for MELISSA JANE WADE:
Melissa named three of her sons the same names as Allen & Polly named their sons. They were David Edward, Homer, and Dewy, who she could have named for Drury Wade, son of Allen. (My mother, Lydia, sister of Milissa, thinks the same about Dewy's name.)
Melissa's husband left her with a house full of kids to raise alone. She worked very hard. She never remarried. She helped to raise some of her grandchildren, (Eddy's children) after their mother got sick and died of T.B. . Melissa was a member of the Church of Christ. She had a new little house in Edgewood before she died. She dipped snuff. Melissa was buried on the day I found my oldest child's first tooth. . I loved Aunt Lissy very much. Mother (Lydia), called her "Sister". ....note by Betty Phillips

Notes for KATHERINE "KATIE" FISHER:
This is the poem I wrote for my grandmother. It was read at her funeral Feb. 26, 2001. It says it all. Lynette

“Ode To Miss Katie Shivers”

Have you ever had a grandma,
One that was like mine?
The single, most loveable woman in all her time.
Well if not, then let me
Describe mine for you.
She had hair that glistens.
And shined like the dew.
Her eyes were like big oceans,
Which have helped me see the seas.
Her hands had been worn from picking cotton and peas.
Her smile on her lips,
And the laughter from within,
Only made you want to grab her up,
And kiss her again and again.
I sure loved my special grandma,
As you can probably tell.
For those who don‘t follow her lead,
Will surely go to hell.
In the good Lord she would always trust,
Never for worldly things did she lust.
She was a simple, caring lady,
Whom her friends and family adored.
I couldn't ask for a greater blessing,
Than to be able to hug her once more.
So let me ask you once again,
Be you family or a friend.
Have you ever had a grandma,
One that was like mine?
The single, most loveable woman in all her time?!

(From my heart to yours, Grandma Katie. You are my world, my life & my strength.)

Together Forever,
Your grand-daughter,
Lynette Delorese Wade

Notes for *LYDIA CAROLINE (BILL) WADE:
Lydia was the baby of 15 children. She was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ, where she attended faithfully until 96 years of age when she became too feeble. When Lydia was a teenager she legally changed her name from Caroline to Bill. When asked (at age 94) why she did this, she said "because it was cute, smart and foxy". She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many of the ladies of Edgewood. She was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. Lydia was 98 years old, as of the 13th day of April, 2003. She lived one more month. Lydia had wanted to make it to 100 but was 2 years short. Much can be said for those 98 years, but most important is that she was a Christian. She lived that life. It has been said that how you live your "dash" (the dash between date of birth and date of death) is what is important. Her "dash" was lived well......memories by her daughter Betty Pickens Phillips

Notes for *OCIE TALMADGE"PAS" PICKENS:
The * was added as a note to find our line easier.
My daddy was Ocie Talmadge "Pas" Pickens. Even though my 3 brothers and my sister called him Daddy, I called him Papa. His grandchildren called him Pappy. Mother called him Pas. Papa was a member of the Edgewood Church of Christ where he attended faithfully after he was baptized at age 63. I remember telling my Aunt Mearl that Papa had been baptized. Her comment was "Thank goodness. He is such a good man. Now he will get credit from God for it". He was a good man, good Christian, and had a knack of making each person in his family feel that they were his favorite. Papa was a lifelong Edgewood area resident. He was a farmer, feed store owner, and loved to fish and was very good at it. Papa always seemed happy and was always whistling a happy tune. He died in 1975 of cancer.....note by his daughter Betty Phillips
